Congrats to Mike Minium and Jeff Saeger for being named IOF Event Advisors for 2015-2016. Now let's put them to work and get our full quota of WRE's for 2016. The deadline for applying for WRE status for events in 2016 is September 30, 2015.

If people don't show up, then the Adviser's work is wasted.

True. But I would expect people to show up for NAOC 2016 and USOC 2016.

Yep. every year I put on a great point to point mass start event with food and prizes and great running and racing, and 1000's of orienteers don't show up.....
Am I a fool, or just persistent?

It's wrong perception that WRE is seen mainly as a tool to solve/guarantee technical aspects of the race. WREs should be mainly about racing but unfortunately WRE has become only a tool to collect fees. Lipica Open and many events here in EU have more than 1000 participants and nobody misses WR points, complaining about the courses or feel disappointed about any other technical/organizational aspects written in the WRE guideline.

Keep the race quality and forget about the status unless you're not in love with it. Ask yourself twice why you as an organizer need a WRE. If you still need it then ask yourself again.

It is wrong perception that orienteering in EU is the same as in NA. 1,000's of orienteers at an event? As if. And how many organizers do you have access to for these events? And how many of these events can you drive to? In NA the WRE races consistently are at the highest quality events, almost always put on by "small" clubs with limited volunteers/staff available, and hence the status makes a clear statement about the organizers intent to make it worth the travel.

Come on Kofols, Tundra - just say "congratulations" and "thanks" to Mike and Jeff and save your hobby horses for other more appropriate time.

+1 AZ

As Meet Director for a WRE several years ago, I found that everyone in the club worked just a bit harder to make sure the event came off without a hitch. And we were gratified that attendance in the simultaneous A-meet was a record-breaker for us: our previous A-meet had 97 runners, the WRE weekend had over 250 paid attendees.

Illinois may not be Iowa, but we found that....

....Ray, people will come Ray. They'll come to Iowa for reasons they can't even fathom. They'll turn up your driveway not knowing for sure why they're doing it. They'll arrive at your door as innocent as children, longing for the past. Of course, we won't mind if you look around, you'll say. It's only $20 per person. They'll pass over the money without even thinking about it: for it is money they have and peace they lack..... - Field of Dreams

@AZ
It is great to see a valid list of EAs. Based on old list http://oldsite.orienteering.org/index.php/iof2006/...
the most of EAs on this new list have adviser status for quite a long time. A simple re-confirmation from IOF and yes, it is nice that most of them have interest to keep the role and thanks to IOF to update the list.

But I would be also interested to know how many EAs haven't decided to keep the EA role in this period. Normally these people have their valid arguments why they didn't ask for re-confirmation. Has IOF got a feedback from them?

Sorry to ask you but I don't understand your argument...
"the status makes a clear statement about the organizers intent to make it worth the travel."

Are you saying that orienteers don't believe in race quality without a WRE status and that races without it are on lower organizational level - although most of organizers have years of experiences or race count for national or some other classification where you normally have same controllers as you would have in case the race count also for WR?

Where do you see IOF added value here?

WREs don't matter as much in Europe because there are a lot of them and they are easy to attend, especially if they are semi-professional or professional orienteer. In NA, WREs matter due to the lack of availability.

I would also add congrats to Stefan Bergstrom from Ottawa on making the new list of WRE advisers.

If I attend a WRE in Aus, I know that I Will Matter.

Incidentally we now have six here this year. Six! Surprisingly it's one long distance, two middle and three sprints.

...because the IOF has now made 3 sprint and 3 middle/long WREs available to any federation in a calendar year. And Australia is determined to make the most of these since they are good for domestic competition and our rankings have some bearing on WOC starting order.

In fact, tRicky, I think you'll find we've borrowed an additional long WRE from NZ in 2015, making a total of 7! This is on top of the 3 WREs Aust held as part of Oceania Championships; alternately, in a year where there are no regional championships, the region as a whole is entitled to an additional 2 sprint and 2 middle/long WREs.

I'll leave others to comment on how they feel about the mandated use of IOF Eventor for WREs.

Really, what is the 7th one? I know of one at the Sydney sprints a couple of weekends ago, two at Easter and three at the nationals. Now I must plan to attend the 7th one too!

please be the ultra long :-D

Can't be, because that's a mass start loop race. Extra WRE will be the WOC long trial in Canberra on May 23/24 weekend. Rumour has it there may be a bonus sprint relay after the middle distance :)

BTW, Australia has 17 IOF Event Advisers. They are probably for loan at competive rates.

The rates may be good, but the shipping costs...

The condition on arrival could be a bit sub-par too. A lot of examples are a bit withered around the edges.

@some bearing on WOC starting order

I didn't notice that this is the main objective of WR. Starting order based on WR is not valid anymore for the best but is still valid for the lower ranked athletes. Am I the only one who think that this system need a new reality? Probably not.

One possibility could be a new regional rankings (what WR really is) a second level international competitions after WC. And WOC starting order could be done based only on past WOC results. Elite block, past meddalist's block, regional block and blocks of 20 based on country quota. It would be also more interesting to follow regional rankings through the year than WR. If we really need only a WR as we have it today along with the WC points than system must be build on more solid basis.
