I'd like to explore the possibility of putting some of "Armchair Orienteering" online - how would I contact Winifred Stott or whomever might help me with permissions?

OK, and a related question. There is a list of publications at the OUSA website (http://www.us.orienteering.org/new-o/resources/pri...). However, it might be nice to have a link to where you can order these books, or a note about how to get hold of them if you can't get them online (eg from one of our orienteering vendors). Maybe contact info for the publisher or author if the book is not otherwise available.

Winnie hasn't been involved in the sport since the early 90's. I believe COF is listed as the publisher of her books so probably best to contact Orienteering Canada.

Re: OUSA website resource list -- copy the ISBN number and put it on Google or Amazon. I'm leery of posting links which will change in a few years and become broken.

Hammer - I believe that the Ontario Orienteering Association is listed as the publisher, not Orienteering Canada.

  5. Basic Essentials Map & Compass, 2007 (3rd edition): Amazon has used from $10.22, new from $37.58.
  6. Be Expert with Map & Compass, 2009. Can purchase from Wiley for $19.95/$12.99 (paper/ebook). From Amazon $11.57 paperback and can get via Prime.

A lot of these are older, and it would be nice if this content were available online, cheap or free.

OOA published books by Jack Lee, Ron Lowry and Ken Sidney in the 80's.
O Canada then published Winnie's books on Armchair Orienteering.

I'm pretty sure that the Coaching book isn't 1991. It was updated. There might be old copies available. I'll ask Mike.

The Stott manuals were printed by the Manitoba Orienteering Association for "COF" in the day. They may still have the "proofs" and/or copies.

There were some good books published by Orienteering Ontario in the past. The board has approved scanning and posting our books online if (a) we can get permission from the author(s) and (b) someone can find a copy of the book and arrange for it to be scanned.

upnorthguy:
I have some of these you could borrow, which ones do you need?
Mar 30, 2015 3:10 AM #
Bash:
Thanks, the only one I have is Orienteering: Skills and Strategies by Ron Lowry and Ken Sidney. Unfortunately, the current board doesn't even have a list of the old Orienteering Ontario publications, let alone manuscripts or author contact info so if APers have copies, maybe this would be a good place to compile the list of Orienteering Ontario-published books: Book title + author name(s) - and any contact hints anyone might have. I'm not 100% sure but it looks like Canadian copyright law requires permission from the publisher (us) + authors to reprint a work - or in this case, scan and post online.

Bash:
Btw we do have permission from Ron Lowry and Ken Sidney so we can move forward with any other books they may have written in addition to Orienteering: Skills and Strategies.

By coincidence, I stumbled across this discussion while Googling to replace a recently water damaged copy of Armchair Orienteering I (from the QOC library).

I even wrote to Orienteering Canada to try to find a copy. No luck, but they will put a note in their newletter, to see if anybody has a copy.

TOm

Hi Tom,

Orienteering Canada doesn't have any copies of this book at this time. We haven't for quite a while. If I come across a copy we can look into scanning it. Keep me posted if you track down a copy.

I am just putting together our next newsletter, so if you would like me to include a request saying that you are looking for a copy, let me know.

Regards,
Charlotte

Does anyone know how to reach Winnifred Stott? In reading about Canadian copyright laws, it looks to me like we would need permission from author(s) as well as the publisher (the orienteering organization). I'm going to write an author friend to get more insight on it.

Haha, too easy - thanks! (You can tell I showed up late to this discussion.) It sounds like Orienteering Canada may be listed as the publisher so if they can reach Winnie and obtain permission - and then find a copy - it should be OK to scan and make it available. When I approached Staples about scanning the O book I have, they requested a letter from the publisher indicating appropriate permissions. It took awhile to get permission from the authors.

I found Winnifred Scott at Windsong farms (referenced above) and wrote her, using the "contact" farm on the Windsong farms website (she has a blog there).

She immediately replied, and said she would search for a copy. Then she reported that she found a new copy, and is going to give me a price after she checks out the shipping cost.

For what it's worth, she goes by "Winnie" -- maybe because she works on a horsefarm ? :)

If she doesn't have additional copies (or the cost is prohibitive) I'm sure QOC would be happy to make this one available for scanning. WIth her permission of course.

Armchair Orienteering Third Edition ,1992, was produced by Manitoba Orienteering Association. They revamped the original as the colour maps were no longer available and then added new colour maps, reorganized pages etc, printed, bound and distributed it. Winnie received royalties. They have copies.

Progress! Today I dropped off my copy of Orienteering:Skills and Strategies by Ken Sidney and Ron Lowry, published by Orienteering Ontario in 1985. It should be scanned and posted as a PDF to the Orienteering Ontario website by the middle of next week. I had to give Staples an official-looking letter from the publisher (signed by me) authorizing the reproduction of this copyrighted work. They sent it off to a central facility to do the work. Estimated cost: $65. Thanks, APers, for nudging this higher on my "to do" list.

I have permission from Ron and Ken to do the same with any other orienteering literature they may have written but this book is all I have. If anyone has other O books or booklets Ron or Ken wrote, please let me know.

Thanks, Bash!

I think Armchair Orienteering would work well as an interactive course on the web. It has all those nice quizzes.
Apr 3, 2015 7:46 PM #
Bash:
Armchair Orienteering belongs to the Manitoba Orienteering Association so they will need to make the call on what to do with it. They may still want to sell it since they have the manuscript. Orienteering Ontario has decided that our books are useful to share but likely out of date, and we don't have any of the original work. We will make them available on our site for free if the authors agree. I'm going to ask Ross if we can scan his copy of 'Orienteering Training and Performance'.

If anyone knows of other books that Ken Sidney and Ron Lowry wrote, I'd like to get those scanned too. Thanks!

re: Orienteering Ontario books

Ron and Ken wrote two together.
Orienteering: Skills and Strategies
Orienteering: Training and Performance

Ron then also wrote:
Orienteering: The Adventure Game (a booklet based on material from the Skills and Strategies.

The only other OO book I'm aware of is:
Orienteering: Instructor's Manual by Jack Lee and Jim Gilchrist

I see Jack every Thursday at Adventure Running Kids and could ask him if you would like.

Orienteering: Skills and Strategies by Ron Lowry and Ken Sidney has been uploaded to the Orienteering Ontario website. However, I can't view it beyond the first 2 pages. The professionals scanned it at high resolution so the file is 182 MB (!) and I'm wondering if the problem is my relatively slow rural Internet. Anyone with real high speed want to give it a try?

Never mind - it was my rural Internet. After a mere 12 minutes (and about $50 in data fees), I was able to see the PDF online.

Anyway, enjoy! Thanks to Upnorthguy, we hope to have the book Orienteering: Training and Performance posted soon too.

If there is any desire to do small quantity publishing of printed versions, let me know. Assuming proper permission, I should be able to get very reasonable rates. One idea: Small quantities could be printed on demand and sold as fundraiser for national teams.

What a 'trip down memory lane' the Skills and Strategies book will be for long time orienteers. There I am in my 'comb-over' days (pre-1986) starting out sandwiched between Sharon Crawford and Sara Mae Berman.
As old as the photos are the techniques, skills and strategies are still valid today.
While the skill sets in many sports have evolved greatly in the last 30 years orienteering is still basically interpret a map, pick a route, get to the control point and repeat. The 'how' of interpreting the map and picking the route has not changed.

as a followup to above: I just received a spanking new copy of Armchair Orienteering directly from Winnie Stott, who very generously sent it to me for $20 including postage ($6.95).

I was planning to return this fresh copy to the QOC library Sunday, but if Bash or others would like us to scan it first-- or do something else with it -- (with permission, of course) I can give it a try. I only have an inexpensive B/W scanner, so would have to bring the color maps to Fed Ex Office for color scanning.

Lucky you! Armchair Orienteering is published by the Manitoba Orienteering Association so they, together with Winnie, will need to make the call on whether they want to distribute it for free. Thanks!

Ron Lowry and Ken Sidney's book Orienteering Training and Performance, published by Orienteering Ontario in 1987 is available online. Special thanks to Ross Burnett for getting his copy of the book professionally scanned and donating the PDF to us to share with the orienteering community. Thanks also to Charlotte MacNaughton for doing her magic to reduce the PDF size in Acrobat Pro.

32MB comes in way under my monthly 200GB limit, which I think I'm yet to reach (in total) in the two years I've been on that plan.
