If "pro" is the opposite of "con", what's the opposite of progress...?

Every time I get depressed about the state of our parliament, it's a slightly perverse relief to know that yours is worse. :)

Ha ha! Spoken like a real Australian! But not true; Australia dumps way more pollutants into the environment than any other country. Are you sure your problems aren't becoming bigger than ours?

....Mining contributes about 5.6% of Australia's Gross Domestic Product. This is up from only 2.6% in 1950.....mineral exports contribute around 35% of Australia's exports. Australia is the world's largest exporter of coal (35% of international trade), iron ore, lead, diamonds, rutile, zinc and zirconium, second largest of gold and uranium, and third largest of aluminium. Japan was the major purchaser of Australian mineral exports...Of the developed countries, perhaps only in Canada and Norway does mining play as significant a part in the economy....

And? We all know coal is good for humanity.

Oh wait, I think I'm arguing your side here. :)

Well, given the fall in oil prices from 100+ just over a year ago to 40 something now - maybe the oil companies do need a break.
However culling this program probably isn't the solution or of any real significance to Big Oil.
Yes its definitely a pity that oil taxes will no longer fund the purchase and preservation of nature for wildlife and recreation. After "50 years of saving five million acres across all 50 states" was it "too good to be true"?

Now to the "Australian dumps". Sorry chitownclark, I couldn't find the words "dump" or "pollute" in your Wikipedia link. But I did find "Mining". Really? What makes cars, houses, phones, trains, bicycles, roads......? Would it be iron, copper, aluminium, nickel, silver, zinc........? What would you do without mining? Back to hunter-gathering? I think even peasants had buildings and swords.

Its harder to be dismissive when your livelihood depends on it. Leigh Creek, coal town.
