What is a hittaut? I feel like an amateur asking this but nevertheless am asking
In April every year they put out about 90 of these metal poles with numbers and letters on them. They stay there until Oct, with some additions each month. The map of this year's locations is:

That's very cool. And you've less than a month left. No pressure there then. Is it aimed at orienteers or general population or both?
This Beat the Street thing is somewhat similar though using openstreetmap and RFID boxes to flash and beep (or ding dong or cluck). There are a LOT of people out doing it. Maybe mapreading is not a lost skill after all
I think it's aimed at everyone. There are plenty of trails leading into the controls so they seem like they're quite used. Does your one work from Google maps? The orienteering club here organise the hittaut so there's a nice 1:12,500 map of the entire city you can get which is pretty cool.
Yup can load in Google maps, or pdf or printed copies. Difficult to read since it's all varying pastel shades, but flipping marvellous all the same. Happy hittauting.
