TIL the Norwegian University of Science and Technology reserves the first spot in its orienteering event signup sheets for Swedish general Carl Gustaf Armfelt. This is in mockery of him getting lost in the mountains campaigning against Norway in 1718, where 3,000 of his men died through cold.

Mostly true. But "getting lost" was probably not even a minor cause of the disaster for the main portion of the army. They had guides who knew the area. A cold blizzard in mid-winter and tired, poorly equipped soldiers were much bigger problems.

There was a lot of harassment of civilians during the campaign and that's a big part of the historical disliking and mockery of swedes in this part of Norway.

And the rest of Norway came up with other reasons.

Armfelt was a dotard.
