Currently, what are the best solutions for a start beeper and clock? We used an Ipad with App this weekend but it wasn't loud enough. We have thought about a speaker but wanted to see if there was a better solution.

ALGE STB1
Its expensive, but its the timing industry standard as a start beep and is indestructible and loud.

VERY expensive! StartClock app (available from iTunes for 99 cents) with an Ipad and a cheap portable wireless speaker works well.

External active speaker and a tab are great, possibly putting the tab in a large map-pouch (sold as trekking / canoeing / sailing equipment) for protection against rain.

Android tab instead of iPad gives you more (and mostly free) app-choices, for example there's "Starter Clock" and "Go! Start Clock" with various beep intervals, and there's "oGo" which makes starting people on up to 8 courses a very simple task (including start beeps as well).

And seeing you're asking for SI eq in another thread: using the purple "Service/OFF" stick on a station programmed as "START" will toggle the special "STACLK" (Start clock) mode, which makes the station do start-beeps every minute too (But note increased battery drain).
