I am looking at the Lawrence temperature at 8 am MST on Saturday and I see it is 17F, which is pretty cold. In contrast, here it is a balmy 33F. You need to have the authorities check the temperature settings because something must be wrong. It's probably safe to turn off the air conditioning in Lawrence by November.

This seems to bear out the old observation that: "You can take the Possum Trot out of December, but you can't take the December out of the Trot."

19F in St. Louis, and we actually had a meet today.

12F according to my weather app when I got up this morning. Things warmed up to 25F when we were orienteering. But it felt colder because it was windy.

I think the current forecast for the Trot weekend is sunny and around 50F. Too warm if you ask me.

I am less surprised to hear that it was 19F in St. Louis than to hear there was any orienteering going on there. I have a hard time remembering when I last heard anything about O' in and around St. Louis.

This is a wholly different kind of contrast. During the early years when I was first orienteering, SLOC was the second leading club in the country, behind only NEOC (which has its own rather stark then-and-now contrast), which would surely never be guessable by any newer orienteers today.

Maybe the Trot organizers will be able to arrange for some iced beverages at several controls and even a misting station, should it appear the heat is likely to be especially formidable. I would think the chosen competition area would lend itself to easy access to any number of controls.

We still do about local meets around once a month, but they are very local. The maps are getting old. It's not what it was 20 years ago and not even in the same universe of 30 years ago.
