Reminder: WCOC National Ranking Event (NRE), Training Camp, and HVO Local Event, Nov. 9-10

Come join us for a weekend of orienteering in western Connecticut and eastern New York, Saturday and Sunday, November 9-10. On Saturday, Nov. 9, WCOC will host a one-day NRE at Ansonia Nature Center, followed by an afternoon orienteering training camp open to all and coordinated by Greg Ahlswede. On Sunday, Nov. 10, HVO will host a local event on the nearby Mountain Lakes map.

Details for the Saturday NRE are below; information on HVO’s Sunday event can be found at https://www.hvorienteering.com/events

Info on WCOC one-day NRE, November 9:

Where:
Ansonia Nature Center, Ansonia, CT. Google maps link: https://goo.gl/maps/8sE7xddoUZzsTfMQA
This was the site of the 2004 Intercollegiate Champs and a 2010 2-day A meet, with the map having been updated in 2018, and again in recent months.

NRE Costs: $10 for individuals, $15 total for families.

Pre-registration is encouraged but not required. To pre-register, email Rick DeWitt (wrdewitt@snet.net) and include (i) your name; (ii) SI (dibber) number, if you have one; (iii) date of birth; and (iv) class you wish to compete in.

Payment and waiver forms will be handled at the event.

Start any time between 10:00 and noon. No pre-assigned start times, but there will be a start crew to hand out maps and assure a minimum 2 minute window between starts on the same course.

Awards: There will be awesome bragging rights, but in lieu of additional awards, WCOC will donate the amount we would have spent on awards to the junior orienteering team.

Event Officials:
Meet Director: Rick DeWitt
Course Setter: Joe Brautigam
Course Vetting: Pavlina Brautigam

Pre-registration is not required (but is welcomed) for Mt Lakes unless you are running both days and want to take part in the chase start.
HVO will have someone at the WCOC registration desk to take Mt Lakes pre-registration or you can send registration direct to me ghckat at Yahoo.com.

Weather is looking nice for this weekend, cool but clear, and the woods are open and fast.

If you are planning on attending Saturday's NRE and haven't yet pre-registered, PLEASE send me your registration info. Pre-registration for Saturday's NRE is not required, but it makes things easier. Send to me (wrdewitt@snet.net) your name, dibber, DOB, course and class you wish to compete in.

Also, if you're planning on attending HVO's nearby event on Sunday, don't overlook Geof's note immediately above.

We look forward to seeing you this weekend!

Here are the course setter notes for Saturday's NRE

Ansonia One Day NRE

Map notes:

Map was field checked within the area of the courses only.
Trails - updates include a section of re-routed mtb trail and removal of a few discontinued trails.
Vegetation - removal of several yellow clearings as they were no longer visible. Upgraded some green areas of barberry to the very slowest level, mainly near the start and finish. Avoid this.
Rock features were mostly untouched however a few rocks were either upgraded or downgraded in size, or changed to boulder cluster. Be aware that some mapped rocks are on the small size and there could be others of equal size not mapped nearby.

Course notes:

The woods are fast. Much faster than a month ago due to the leaf drop and dying back of ground cover (ferns and blueberry). There are a few holdout beech trees with leaves however.
Some controls are close to one another so it goes without saying always check the codes.
There is one start for all courses and it is a short walk from the parking lot. Allow 5 minutes.
There will be no bathrooms at the start so go before. Clothing will be collected and brought to the finish if needed, however it is a very short distance to the start.

Results are up on AP. Nice day to be out.

I know John Porter's results on Brown need correcting--I'll fix that soon. If you see any other issues, let me know.

Good seeing everyone today.
