The city of Tallahassee in Florida is the state capital and the home to three post secondary education institutes, one being Florida State University. It is located in northern Florida, many miles away from the larger population centers of Orlando, Miami and Tampa.
Tallahassee has some great parks in an around the city, great for orienteering at least.
It seems the only thing Tallahassee has lacked is orienteers and orienteering events. That is has lacked until now.
A freshman FSU student, a graduate of the Florida high school JROTC orienteering program, has wanted to continue her orienteering but finds herself many hours away by car from the nearest competitions in Florida, Alabama or Georgia. Several JROTC programs in the area want to begin competing in orienteering but are just too far away from the sport's centers in the Orlando and Suncoast area.
So I thought if they all can't get to orienteering we should take advantage of their great parks and bring orienteering to them. Will that take a long time to get going? No, not really.
We, that is Suncost Orienteering along with the FSU student and the Tally (local nickname for Tallahassee) area JROTC, will be hosting a demonstration orienteering event there on March 28th 2020. We think this will be the first orienteering event in the area, at least the first on a standard orienteering map.
Why am I telling you? Surely among all the Attack Point readers there will be some who are close enough to Tallahassee to come to our first event or who have friends in that area who they can tell about the event.
Is there anyone interested in volunteering some mapping time to an area with six base maps in five more parks ready to go?
Are there any O clubs in the US willing to donate excess event supplies to a new club.? (An old SI set would be great! ha)
Let's rally for Tally!

Is there anything ongoing in Tally?

Is there anything ongoing in Tally? Not at the moment that I know of. I have two parks mapped and ready to hold events, another one near completion. But events there are dependent on local JROTC units being able to participate and as I understand it they have been effectively closed down by Covid-related restrictions.
Do you have an interest in getting something going there. I'm open to suggestions.

I´m more generally interested from distance ;-). My son is a freshman FSU student in the swimming & diving team. We hope that we can visit him some day (originelly planed for Christmas holidays but cancelled due to COVID-19). Then, we would be glad if we (my daughter is an orienteerer as well) could use an o-map for a training or even a little competition. So it would help to have a contact ... ;-)

Clauda: Currently I am the custodian of all the Tally area orienteering maps. One of the parks is very close to FSU. For sure when you are planning a visit let me know and you can have copies of whatever I have. My e-mail address is in my profile.
