Spotted two people rollerskiing on a Melbourne road yesterday (a quiet one which gets used a lot by cyclists). Not something you see a lot here, although there's likely to be an upward surge in interest in cross-country skiing (which in Australian mountains is often a backcountry activity - there are only a few places with prepared trails), given the uncertain prospects of the downhill season.
Definitely looks more fun than it is, but you’re right about the glide! Especially when you’re proficient at it, I think it’s great x training. I pity the poor folks who’d try it without a skiing background...
Are downhill areas talking about not opening up? Strangely, they were one of the first things allowed to open back up here in OR (last few weeks of spring skiing as of a few weeks ago). Maybe the lodges stayed closed and you could only lift with people in your household? I don't know what their rules are actually.
And yeah, there's an infamous story of me trying to teach my really non-athletic best friend in middle school how to rxc. She was covered in scrapes by quitting time and her parents were not too impressed.
