worth finding a local friendly bike shop who will sort it an a couple of minutes (probably). Better that than having something major go wrong at far end of a long cycle...

Gears are my nemesis too. After several years of managing the family fleet of bikes I can just about sort them out, but it took a long time to get even the simple stuff through my thick skull. But really, it's down to using the H and L screws to ensure that the derailleur is in the right position for top and bottom gears on the cassette, and then tweaking the cable tension where required to balance between shifting up and down. Sounds simple. Several hours later...

Thanks Brad...sounds about right. I think "several hours later" is my motto for all aspects of bicycle maintenance.
