For five consecutive days last summer, teams of adventure enthusiasts from all over the world took to the mountainous region of Savoie Mont Blanc in France to trail run, mountain bike, paddle, swim, and climb as part of the inaugural Saab Salomon Mountain-X Race. North America was represented by teams Salomon / Crested Butte (Coed & Women entries), Paparazzi, and Nike in 2008, one of the teams to cheer for could be yours!

In partnership with Storm Racing and Golden Horseshoe Orienteering (GHO), Salomon Canada has created a opportunity for a team of three to win a free entry and travel package for participation in the 2008 Saab Salomon Mountain-X Race slated for July 21st to 26th, taking place in the French Alps once again.

"Canada has such a rich history in trail running and multi-sport racing competitions", comments Francis Argouin, Marketing Manager for Salomon Canada. "We wanted to celebrate the flavour of what Salomon created in France last summer and give people a chance to vie for a slot in this year's international event. Given the momentum and professionalism of the event partners we've selected to work with, we're really excited about creating an incentive for all levels of participants to hit the trails this spring."

"When Salomon approached us with the idea, we were all over it!", said Mike Waddington of GHO. "We've been running orienteering and adventure runs for years so we've become very familiar with Salomon and the type of events they support. We're so happy to be involved so you can expect an extra special event this Spring!"

Sean Roper, Race Director for Storm Racing and member of Team Salomon-Suunto's adventure racing squad adds, "Our events have grown substantially since our first race in 2002 and our participants have come to love the race experience Storm the Trent offers. This project came to us at just the right time as we can extend the reach of our sport to even more people, whether they're competing for the big prize or just out for some fun in the outdoors. The prize winning team can expect a loud ovation from the 500 others that will be in Warsaw this May."

To become the prize winning threesome, your team must participate in both events this Spring:

Event # 1 - Salomon Giant's Rib Raid 25K Adventure Run, Milton, Ontario: April 12th

Event # 2 - Axis Gear Storm the Trent presented by Salomon, Warsaw, Ontario: May 10th.

Details of the point system and team composition criteria that will decide the prize winning team are forthcoming at a to-be-launched website.

Katta and two strong males might be one of the few coed teams that could pull off a win in both races, but I don't think one of them would/should be me. As has been said about me so many times before, she could do better. But I have to admit that this has been in my thoughts since I read it yesterday, as well as the fact that such a prize will bring out some deadly teams and serious competition esp. among the elite men. For that reason I love it. The only way I could love it more is if there were more incentive for coed or all female teams to get out there too, but this is still excellent news.

In case you haven't looked at the fine print yet, Phatty has worked very hard to develop a points system that he hopes will level the playing field between male and coed teams. I've read it in detail, and I really have no idea whether it will favour one category or the other. It will depend a lot on who enters each category - and there's nothing to prevent top U.S. teams like Sole or Nike from entering.

Unfortunately, as you point out, the all-female category could not get the same special attention, given that Salomon Canada only has the budget to send one team to France. Female teams will be competing against coed teams - which in the case of the Salomon Bobkittens would be a fair competition - but Leanimal will not be participating, since she has been helping with the organization.

The Salomon Giant's Rib Raid course has been set and it proves to be a challenging race with both technical running and orienteering. 25km and the race will have some familiar sections including a matrix (where teams can split up).

The pot of prizes for those teams that do both the Salomon Giant's Rib Raid Adventure Run and the Storm the Trent Adventure Race just got a whole lot bigger! Note: While this is an Ontario qualifier, teams can be from ANY province or ANY country!

Not only will Salomon Canada be giving away a prize package worth over $5,000 (race in France for free) to the winning team but they have added prizes for 2nd and 3rd overall.

Because the main goal of this event is to get people to try more outdoor adventures Salomon Canada have added a lot more door prizes for teams that enter both races. This very well could be the biggest prizing ever associated with an orienteering race in North America. Lots of gear from Salomon, free entries to 5peaks races, NavStock, Storm the Ten and the City Chase.

So if you have AR friends that want to try an orienteering adventure run or if you have always wanted to try an adventure race then sign up for both these two races and join the expected over 500 adventure running and adventure racing participants in MXR Canada.
