Does anyone know if Anza is happening next year? Thanks
Sadly, the SDO website/meetup pages seem to be inactive.
Jeremy, this isn't what you asked, but SWSW 2022 is definitely happening (also with great desert terrain), 2/19 - 2/27 in Tucson & Phoenix:

I talked to Mark Prior about Anza-Borrego last week. He has a hip injury and isn't in shape to set courses. There doesn't appear to be anyone else to pick up the baton and run with it.
SWSW looks like the best opportunity for desert orienteering in the near future.
SDO member here, we just don't have the volunteers for this year, but I really want us to be back in 2023. I had thought I could just get away with re-using some old maps as a stopgap, but we would still incur the full permit and potty costs ($1500-2000) to do any kind of organized event so that doesn't make much sense.
Anyway, if you are escaping snow by visiting Anza Borrego this winter, let me know and I can come up with some past maps for you to play with. Or if you want to set a course for 2023, contact me as well.
Tad
Has anyone considered using the badlands to the north of the mountains at Anza-Borrego? I went for a long run there and back around the mountain after the event a few years ago, and it was fantastically-complex ridge-reentrant terrain.
So how about 2023? Is it happening next year?
I am happy to share that Anza Borrego will return for 2023 with tentative plans for a 4 event weekend on Jan 14/15. Please look for more details in the weeks to come as we solidify permits and course setters. We are all excited to get back out in the beautiful desert with all of you!
On a personal note, my hip injury has healed and I have relocated to San Diego, so will be able to take a more meaningful role in next year's event (and SDO in general).
Great!
I have no bucket-list -- but if I did, Anza Borrego O-ing would be on it!
I would seriously consider going in 2023...
...IF it wasn't the same weekend as OUSA Junior Nationals.
Awesome I look forward to the event!
As it happens, Anza Borrego was featuring on a show which was on a TV in the background at a restaurant I was at in Melbourne last weekend. I can see why American orienteers are so enthusiastic about it.
It's certainly different terrain than many places in the US, particularly the "maze" area.
Any more info on 2023 Anza?
I see that Anza is on! Which is great but I don't see my favorite night event....any chance you might consider some sort of informal night based event to add to the weekend festivities?
I am working on an idea for a informal free Saturday night event for campers at the 2023 AB event. As always we will be having a bonfire that evening as well.
