Registration is now open for the Memorial Day Weekend training camp, hosted by NEOC with training by guest coach Greg Ahlswede.

2 days of advanced & intermediate training, plus a Monday event. Sharpen your skills, socialize with other orienteers, and get ready for summer (and fall). Plenty to do in the area for non-orienteering family members also.

Will there be courses designed to challenge national team level orienteers at this event? It looks like an awesome weekend and I'm wondering I should be passing it on to Team Canada.

Yes! The advanced training will be designed to be challenging for national team members.

Here's the planned schedule, with both advanced and intermediate options explained.

Saturday AM - Terrain Familiarization
Option 1: Low level aerobic run through terrain focusing on the mapping style, accuracies, inaccuracies, runnability.

Option 2: a map hike, with similar group discussion adapted to the level of the group.

Saturday PM:
Option 1: Downhill intervals - 500m to 800m intervals primarily downhill to practice overspeed in terrain and practice map reading at speed

Option 2: Either a pairs relocation exercise, or a “traffic lights” course to practice changing speed depending on the navigational difficulty.

Sunday AM:
Mass start diamond course - A mass start designed in a way that the participants will continually see each other and therefore run under pressure with distractions.

This will be the same for intermediates, but if it is a big group, we will "seed" it, so that people are running with those of similar speed/technical ability. If the advanced course is long, there will be a shorter version for intermediates.

Sunday PM:
A line-o or corridor course to practice precise map reading and navigation while keeping the physical training load low.

Same for intermediate (though there may be a "cut off" to make a shorter course).

Overall, it is definitely aimed at people running advanced courses, or moving up from Orange to advanced courses.

For national team level folks, a number of the exercises are focused on racing: the more speedy folks that attend, the more it will simulate racing conditions in Europe.

For the rest of us, see that note about seeded starts for the mass start course ;-)
