Aviad:
The Austin Orienteering Club is seeking experienced mappers for 1-2 mapping projects and 1-2 existing map updates, all in the Austin area, with the first map being ready for an event at the beginning of October. Preference for Texas based mappers with experience in mapping in Texas, however mappers from other areas are welcome and will be considered.

If you are an experienced mapper with an existing portfolio or know anyone who is, please reach out to austinorienteeringclub at gmail and outline your experience and availability to begin mapping. Attaching representing maps/map samples is recommended.

We will reach out to potential candidates within the next month or so.

I hope Austin gets some takers. I think Austin and San Antonio have some of the 'best orienteering terrain close to major metropolitan areas' between the Appalachians and the Rockies. It would be great to see that potential developed.

If you think of Bastrop SP, which was indeed a very nice terrain, it completely burned

Our (Cognite's) US headquarter is in Austin, so I might be coming by this fall. :-)

Yurets: I know Bastrop and know of the fire. I have great memories of competing at Bastrop in 1995. I think it was the last time I used a master map to draw on the courses.
Funny thing about the fire: while it totally decimated the forest in a large part of the park it left the SW corner, where the golf course was, untouched. Now the golf course is closed, opening up potential O terrain if the park let them and if the club wanted. I don't think either is the case.
There is lots of other rolling, hilly, wooded terrain in and around Austin, particularly to the north and west.
And Sprint possibilities? How about the University of Texas? Several maps there. Terje, How about that business park where Cognite is located? I bet you could whip up a map there in no time flat. I bet those cute young ladies pictured on the Cognite website would love to go orienteering during their lunch break.

That piney terrain (east of Austin) was a unique place in central Texas, and it is now gone.
What you are describing --the so called Texas Hill Country -- is largely unsuitable for orienteering. I saw a lot of it in West Texas last year.

Hi Aviad,

Are you interested in hearing from mappers that available this year but might be interested in the future?

Tinnishill: Respectfully that is between the AOC and prospective applicants.

Whether it's paid or unpaid is a reasonable question. I would expect that since they are having a screening process that there is compensation involved.

Yes, it is a paid job and the goal of this post is find potential candidates.

At this point, and in parallel to looking for a mapper, the club's board is finalizing a short list of potential venues to be mapped, all within up to one hour from Central Austin. Once this list is finalized, any potential candidate will be asked to quote the work and cost involved. We will look at the overall cost, which can include reasonable expenses, and factor in the mapper's experience, availability and other relevant parameters. We would like to build a long term relationship with the selected mapper.

More details will be offered through direct communication with the club through austinorienteeringclub at gmail.

I welcome anyone to apply, whether you are available right away or not, and promise to get back with more details as soon as I know about potential venues and a yea or nay for a quote within a month.

I just sent an email to apply as a mapper in the Austin area. I am a semi-professional mapper and have been mapping for over 3 decades since 1991 and have accomplished more than 20 projects since.

Most recently I mapped over 30km2 terrain for 3 maps in Switzerland including a map that will be used this year for Swiss O Days, as well as over 20km2 for 3 maps for RMOC in Colorado.

Yves, that is a wonderful news. Hope you'd be able to strike a deal with Austin club.
