It took quite a bit of last-minute action to fill out the calendar of US championships for 2008. But, as it turned out, many of us were fortunate to be able to enjoy the fine weekend just hosted by Rochester OC with the Middle and Relay Champs, or OCIN's Flying Pig with the Sprint and (Ultra)Long Champs. And Laramie will hold the 2-day Classic Champs in August. So 2008 seems to be in good shape.

But a check of the 2009 calendar shows none of these events have organizers, just an indication of interest from Cascade OC for the Middle champs.

I hear rumors that various clubs are thinking about possibilities. If so, it would be nice to go public with your plans sooner rather than later, so we can see if any recruiting needs to be done. Is anyone interested?

One other thing to bear in mind is that Clare, USOF president, is starting an effort to examine our championship structure, and is looking for interested people to take part in that effort. Whether anything they come up with would be approved in time to affect 2009 is another matter.

Who is going to be next to offer to organize our various championships?

And, thinking a little further ahead, the Team Trials are set for 2009 for the Bay Area, but we are looking for a host for 2010. Please contact me (pg@crocker.com) for more info.

I'm aware of a rumor of a "1 day classic championship". I was asked "is this taboo or possible". I responded "both" [more or less]. (personally, I don't see it as a problem once a decade).

Commentary on this question here is welcome so I can get back to the prospective applicant.

If this rumor is related to 2009 then it would be best to get a bid submitted. It is unlikely that any official changes to the structure will be passed before the 2009 schedule starts forming, so I would expect the task group work to be effective for 2010. But a bid for a 1 day classic Champs would get discussion going and the Board could still choose to approve it. It is more likely to get approved if there is plenty of lead time for discussion. Just make sure that it's clear in the bid what the intentions are if it is declined. Switch to 2 day classic or withdraw the bid?

To date the only Championship set for 2009 is the Interscholastics. I haven't heard of any other bids.
