Does any one have any info on the orienteering scene in Luxembourg? I am relocating there soon and I would love to hit the ground orienteering.

Thanks.

Based upon my recent experience at the 3-Days of Belgium, which was only about 20 miles from Luxembourg, it would seem that there are a great deal of German, Dutch, and of course, Belgian orienteers in the area.

not to mention France. Don't know whether there is anything happening actually inside luxembourg...

This potentially links to the discussion of largest contiguous map - I wonder which country could boast "Most % of the country mapped to O-standards" (street or forest) - Andorra, Luxembourg, Lichtenstein, the Vatican? Of course, coming from Canada I would think size categories would only be fair.....

Ooh, that could be an interesting metric state by state in the US. I can think of a few states that would do quite poorly. I think MD, CT, and MA would probably do well...

For per capita mapped area, I think WY is probably in the clear lead.

If only this was populated for the USA. We could answer this question.

This is probably the best map available in Luxembourg:

I think Belgium has the best orienteering scene in the neighbourhood followed closely by Netherlands. Most of the orienteers in France and Germany live in other parts of the countries.

Switzerland has dense map coverage -- we have a 6-hour rogaine event near Zurich this November, for example, and we can stitch together 4 distinct 1:10,000 maps that have all been revised in the last couple years. It takes you from the city of Zurich all the way south to end of the Zurichsee and the start of the real alps!

@mabuhr: we had a Dutch runner come to our 3-day Untamed Switzerland event last year (www.UntamedAdventure.com) and he said it was the best (and tallest!) terrain relatively near Benelux. Of course, that's all a matter of taste as "near" for you may mean less than the 5 hours it took him to drive to Switzerland.

Hi Plafrance,

My experience - as I am living in the Netherlands:
There is not much orienteering going on in Luxembourg. Belgium has the best orienteering scene close to Luxembourg. It is quite a ride from Luxembourg > the Netherlands so I won't recommend that for a single race.

J-man: I tried to input another US map yesterday into the World of O' database you mention, went thru the whole process, but it is not yet showing up on the map or by search. If I can get it to work, I'll add more...

Pete: if you're moving some time soon, this would be a good first encounter with the French scene. For events in and near Alsace (not a horribly long drive/train ride), the site I like the most is the calendar of ASOPE

Hi, let me add that the random orenteers in Luxembourg are gathered around a yahoo newsgroup: http://groups.yahoo.com/group/lux_orienteers/.

EDIT: and we have now the domain orienteering.lu that will host a website, one day.
