Below is a link to a short film Mapgirl and I made for a competition in the local newspaper. It is about an individual sport...the word "orienteering" does appear in it....and it is about the great outdoors and the average Aussie's attitude towards it.

If you have a couple of minutes please have a look, it's titled "I fish and I vote", and if you think it is OK then vote for it (you don't have to fish) so we can win some cash and a camera. If you think it's crap that's fine as well.

We filmed it in about 3 hours with no pre-planning except for a bit of location scouting via google maps (satellite) and got a friend to do voice over the next evening. The film had to be no longer than 2 minutes and contain 4 of the following items. The Newcastle Herald; Grapes; a Knight; the Beach, the Hunter River. We used all 5 but you wont notice the beach.

To make it even more difficult it had to be shot only using in-camera editing meaning you are not allowed to download the video footage and alter it on a PC editing package although you can do whatever you like with the sound.

There are also judges considering these for first and second place that attract even better prizes (AUD$2500 for first), but scoring some of that would be wishful thinking. Personally I think the standout winner is "Little Jim" made by a local advertising agency.

Ahhhhh....beer.... fishin'.... grapes - very good!

Why didn't you put the 50m walk with fishing rod on your training log?

You have set also a new dress standard for all NOC members to aspire to - do you want to push for it as "apres-run" uniform.

I might like to suggest that the belly is a hollywood style prothesis.

I'd like to but it isn't.

I wasn't going to mention that, but at least the stubble is all yours ( and can be removed easily)

Are you going to turn up in costume tomorrow at Pelton, as part of your blatant publicity drive?

I might wear the beanie if it is as cold as it is predicted to be.

You might note how I deliberatley put on weight for this part as did Renee Zelwieger for the Bridget Jones roles. It's a sign of an actors commitment and dedication that one is willing to do this especially in this time of intense body image focus. I hope it doesn't affect my orienteering too much and I'm back to my svelt running figure in the near future, but perhaps not by tommorrow.

I just don't understand. Life is too short to waste it fishing Geoff. But I did like the placement for the Newcastle Herald. I'm not quite sure its what they had in mind, but at least you didn't do a 2 minute feature on the symptoms of cholera.

G'Day "________"

I realised afterwards that I don't have a fishing license.
Guess it's been a long time since I wet a line.
Not sure what the fine is nowadays but I bet it's not cheap.

I did realise that we were placing the sponsors product in a bad light.
It's not a problem when our expectations aren't so high.

RObert Deniro gained a lot to play Al Capone in the Untouchables., although he lost all of it and more to play Raging Bull.

Sounds like a challenge Leepback. Looking forward to counting your abs at the Oceanias in January.

Hello Birdman Nice to hear from you.

It was a challenge and as usual we threw a very small amount of effort into it but we were pretty happy with it and I think it has something to say that we orienteers (and you birdmen) are all too familiar with. I have an edited version that is much better.

I'm pretty sure I'll be there in January but Mapgirl is having extreme difficulty getting holidays. I've advised her to bribe one of her workmates to swap dates (none of them have a lot of disposable cash) but she thinks that's unethical. I say anything goes if we want to get to NZ for Oceania.

Sadly neither my acting nor weight loss capabilities are any match for Deniro. Not even close.

if it's anywhere near as much fun as this years Waitangi Carnival it should be terrific.

Read my log of that trip mentioned in the latest edition of The Australian Orienteer
