Time to resurrect this beastie? How about Dryandra Foot-O (some variation), MTBO, the night (mini) MTBO and then the 10k O-course the next morning.

I think the last one was 10 years or so ago, back in The Day.

I actually know my way around Dryandra (a bit) so I might not be as far behind on the foot-O events as usual. I wouldn't discount it though. I'm up for the challenge.

The traditional Killamunda was a running race (usually the toughest we could find on the WAMC calendar), followed by a ride to wherever that day's O event happened to be (hopefully somewhere with Beraking type terrain), followed by the H1 course, all on a Sunday morning (well, some people may not have finished by 12.00 noon).

My first suggestion would be 24th August (Geraldton marathon, Mt Dale) but it might be difficult to finish by 12.00 (and I'm talking midnight, not noon).

The only problem is LOSTRichard can't be there, and I think he's the only person that's completed every Killamunda.

So, how about 20th July - King of the Mountain, ride from Fred Jacoby to Callophylla (or at least to the end of the bitumen), and run M21A at the Badge event.

Yeah I doubt I'll be going to Mt Dale either and a ride from Geraldton seems a bit extreme in any event.

July 20 is the Teva race so that counts most of us out.

(Reasonable) Options I see for WAMC/orienteering are:
-Sept 7 "Pancake run" (Kings Park 15km) and Avon Valley NP foot-O (the horror!)
-Sept 21 Fremantle Half Marathon (21.1km blimey) and Whiteman Park foot-O

There is also Aug 10 Wally Cairns Cross Country and Mt Billy foot-O but that's the day after the Painathlon and it will hurt, badly!

There are other options but they clash with state foot and MTB orienteering events so we won't go down that road.

Simmo will they keep the O courses open for us a bit late if we plan something? I'm pretty useless (at orienteering) at the best of times.

To my knowledge the killamunda challenge has only included a marathon club run twice, both times being the Darlington half marathon, so claiming that is the tradition is stretching things a bit. My memory is that the winner had to decide on the challenge for next year. It died many years ago when John won it and never set a challenge for the next year so I reckon it should be up to John to decide how to resurrect it.

You are right Craig. It never involved a WAMC run in the two or three years I did it. The other (sensible, unlike Simmo's substance affected detour) option is July 13 Mt Yetar weekend...

July 20 TEVA
Aug 10 Painathlon day before
Sep 7 I'm in Poland, ditto Jen
Sep 21 is GSAR
Mt Dale - like hell

I think July 13 will entice a couple more people to do it as Dryandra only caters to those staying at Dryandra and committing to the whole weekend away. And we'll all be there to have a bit of fun anyway, no need to ruin it by making it a Killamunda.

So here's the go:

July 13, 7:30am kick-off/bounce down/back pass/tip-off at car-park on north side of Causeway bridge.
1) Run a lap of the bridges anti-clockwise.
2) Mount the bicycle of your choice and pedal your socks off to Flynn Rd.
3) Swap to MTB (if you wish) and ride the short distance to Yetar Spring event.
4) Pick up H2 map and run the course.
The time starts at the start of Bridges run and ends at the conclusion of the orienteering event. There is no clock stopping for mechanicals/nature calls/no lift arranged. Should be completed in 4-4.5hrs at best is my guesstimate without thinking about it too hard.

I will arrange for someone/someones to keep an eye on your MTBs at Flynn Rd/ Great Eastern Hwy junction. I will arrange for the H2 maps to be pre-drawn so there's no delay there. You will need to liaise with other entrants to get the bikes to Flynn Rd (ie. my car will take 7 bikes - I just need a driver!).

Enter by emailing me.

Forgot about GSAR.

I'm in. My MTBike would appreciate a lift :-)

As to your estimates, well I'll probably add another hour for orienteering.

I will sacrifice my love of running, haha, to meet you all at the start, drive all the MTBs to the corner of Gorrie Rd and GEHwy (which isn't far from flynn road is it?) And then perhaps find something to amuse myself with (hmm, i wonder...) until you all arrive from your masochistic roadie-fest. And I will then run the H2 course so you can all wait for me in return. If at any point i become jealous of the masochistic roadie-fest, then i can ride home afterwards. Which is after all the sensible direction, being downhill.

That sounds like a good plan. We could add one lap of the Forsyth Mill circuit in that way too at the start... that's out near Gorrie Rd MTBjen, you should look it up sometime. :-) But seriously, you should do the lot, sort of thing you'd be good at I reckon.

I would be so far behind after the bridges run that it would be ridiculous, especially given how long it will take me to do an H2 course. Honestly, I would rather go mountain biking and be fresher for orienteering. You will need someone to hand out cookies and present a wreath to our new superhero "Killa[MAN]" at the end, anyway!

Red wine is still legal Tooms. To be a true Killamunda, the run needs HILLS, the ride needs HILLS, and the orienteering needs HILLS (and some green). The emphasis in the name was on the Kill bit. But, and I did remember this after my earlier post, the latest winner does have setting rights, so I guess you can do whatever.

I also made a concession in my earlier post that probably wouldn't have been allowed in the 'old' days, ie you had to ride the whole way, not just to the end of the bitumen.

And as I said, Richard may be disappointed if you run it while he's not here.

You disappoint me simmo. I thought you were tougher than that.

There are hills in the run - you have to run up the bridge incline to get onto the Narrows and then down the other side.

We'll go ahead with it 'as is' otherwise we won't get as many people all together at the one time. If LOSTrichard is bothered at missing out we'll do it anyway for something fun and not call it the Killamunda Challenge... he may get internet access in Portugal eventually? Then next year, whoever wins this 'unofficial' event can organise it earlier in the season!!
