Sounds a lot like my ankle at Sage Stomp. I didn't do much to speed up recovery and thus it was 2 weeks before I could run on it, and even then it was not an efficient stride - good news was that I was only 5% slower than my previous training run on that 10K route.
Your friend Claire recommends alternating hot and cold water in the shower - it helps pump out the dead cells and increases circulation.
