Discussion: O' training on my rest day?

Anna:
My track team practices every day but Sunday, but Sunday is also usually the most convenient day for Orienteering. Is it okay to use my rest day to do navigation and just try to avoid running hard, or should I try to work in O' training on Saturdays instead of our long runs?

There are lots of map contact drills that don't require hard running. Control picking and line-O are two. You could also try your hand at mapping.

While the above training is certainly valuable, don't completely neglect some quality nav work at speed. Reading (as in interpreting, not just looking at) the map while running fast in the terrain is the fundamental skill of orienteering.

Rick, Nick, Mom, and I all went out to Cuivre River today and got some good training done. Mom walked with the map for about an hour and a half, and Nick, Rick, and I did 3 exercises: 4 controls where we each took a different route choice, a sprint course which was about 1.5 k, and some shadowing. Rick would go out before us and put tapes out.
It wasn't supposed to be very hard running, but it's hard to concentrate on going slow when my brother and I are comparing splits at the end of the legs. I guess I'll find out this week if the training was too much or not.
