You and Uli Aeschlimann told me some funny stories about when you first came here to Portugal in 1990. What you saw by that time was, lets say, the beginning of orienteering in Portugal. Now you have participated in the biggest anual event here. In the Swiss training camp you used SPORTident system owned by a local club (Ori-Estarreja), laser printed maps (developed by a runner from same club) and was accommodated near some very good maps. What do you think of this evolution among other recent O-Countries?

Yeah, it's astonishing how high the level is now after 14 years since I was the first time here in Portugal. Concerning almost everything, let's say, the standard of the maps, course setting and organization of competitions. Then, the support now with SPORTident in this training camp, map printing quality which is absolutely fantastic, unbelievable, I've almost never seen that before in such a quality.
I would say the last thing which is missing here are, lets say, 2 or 3 very good Portuguese runners, elite runners. I remember last year in the sprint competition in World Championship, there was one Portuguese with very good split times. I was in the finnish area watching in the big screen, and it was immediately clear to me that he is a very good runner and that he has to have good technique as well to have that splits, but then he weakened a bit towards the end of the course and I don't remember his name right now because...

...Marco Póvoa
Yeah, Póvoa. ... because he's still not good enough to be well known. But I'd say he's on the right way to become a good runner. I'm not asked to do it, but if I can recommend something, it would be to try to participate more often abroad in other countries. Let's say Switzerland or France or maybe even Scandinavia, to learn and to improve the technique. It's a long and hard way in orienteering because it has a lot to do with the experience. You must see the terrain before you can do really well in it and that's a long way. I hope there are some more Portuguese athletes that are keen to do it this way.

Laser map printing was recently discussed in IOF. Some weeks ago a Finnish runner used maps we produce here in Portugal using this technology and said it was one of the best printing he ever saw. After using it in Portugal "O" Meeting and in Swiss training camp, do you share this opinion?

Yeah, as I said before I fully share this opinion, certainly. They are very readable even in the scale 1:15000 and that's important. Last year, quite often, competitions were run with maps printed with low quality and that's a pity, because then we lose a part of the standard that we had reached years ago. Some organizers choose a cheaper solution which is clearly worse quality than the other one, but this printing here, yeah, I can only say it's fantactic!
