Have you tried massaging it out at all? I have chronically tight calves, and sometimes they'll get uber-tight for no real reason, but I find either massaging them by hand or rolling them on a foam roller really helps. If you don't have a foam roller, you can use a wine bottle or something else of that diameter to roll underneath your calves, which works to get out some of the knots. My calves also benefit from a lot of stretching. Good luck at the A-meet...

Thanks, Alex; I'll give that a shot. I'm concerned that this may be worse than just tight calves - perhaps a very light strain. I guess we'll see if I fall on the course and start screaming in agony?

Also, are you not going to the A meet? I didn't see you on the start list. Alas!

I'm headed up to NH for an uphill race, otherwise I would have thought about the A meet. Although I haven't orienteered in so long it would be ugly...

If it is strained, you can also try alternating ice and heat (10min each) ending on the heat before exercise, that helps. You can generally train through strains, just don't do stuff that hurts.

Excellent! Thanks for the advice, Alex. I guess in your athletic career, you have had plenty of opportunities to learn about such things, eh?

They say first-hand experience is where its at! Although I wouldn't mind skipping some of that first-hand experience...
