OCIN is planning a winter junior training camp on Friday January 2 and Saturday January 3 near Hamilton, Ohio. We're planning training activities including the opportunity to run (or re-run) courses used 2 weeks earlier for a TROL (Tristate Regional Orienteering League) competition. We're considering either a 1 or 2 day camp, with the possibility of staying overnight in a heated dormitory. Food and fun will definitely be as much a part of the weekend as orienteering!
Cost will be very reasonable.
Juniors, let us know here (or on the event page) if you are interested in coming!

This sounds like fun! What is the minimum age?

We've said 6th grade in the original information, but we could stretch that a bit for someone with orienteering experience.

What's the maximum age? (I know you said "Juniors," but I figured it couldn't hurt to ask.)

Ian, we'd welcome your experience and enthusiam! Recent junior alums would be welcome. We initially planned to model this loosley on Bob Turbyfill's zero-to-orange concept, since we just started an interscholastic league this winter and have several new middle school and high school orienteers coming to events. But it looks like only a few of them will be able to attend, and I'm hearing more interest from older, experienced juniors. So I'm now thinking more along the lines of some pairing / shadowing where those with more experience would help teach and coach (but of course you also learn a lot yourself when you teach).

It looks like plans for the camp are coming together. We're now planning for a single day with no overnight, start at 8 am with hot chocolate & donuts, then a full day of activities with lunch and pizza dinner included, concluding about 6 pm. We expect cost to be around $20 including all maps, training materials and meals. If you think you can come, please let us know if Friday Jan 2 or Sat Jan 3 would be better. I would say we're leaning toward Saturday; we'll make a decision late Tuesday.

For those coming from out of town, OCIN will have their annual New Year's Night Score Orienteering on New Year's Eve and our annual New Year's Day courses, so that will give 3 days of organized activity. There are many maps and several permanent courses nearby as well for individual training.

Camp details are posted at http://ocin.org/TROL. The entry form (word doc) is at http://ocin.org/TROL/TROL-Documents/TROLCampInvita...The cost will be $20 per person which will include a full day of orienteering training and activities, lunch, dinner, and a printed packet of all course materials. We'll be using a heated lodge with modern facilities, and we'll mix indoor classroom sessions with short outdoor practices throughout the day. Email Pat Meehan if you are planning to attend.
