Discussion: Ride request- Seattle to Vancouver training camp?

in: Vancouver Sprint Training Camp 2009 (Feb 13–15, 2009 - Vancouver, Canada)

Suzanne:
I'm thinking of flying from San Francisco to Seattle to go to the sprint training camp in Vancouver since I've heard that it's often easier to get plane tickets to Seattle. Is there anyone from Seattle going to the training camp that might be able to give me a ride? Or, do you have other recommendations for transportation?

I'm happy to offer cookies, cliff bars, etc:)

You could take the bus (greyhound I think), then hopefully we can find someone for you to carpool to the events with when you are here.

There will be bunch of people going from Seattle. I am sure someone else will chime in too. I am not sure yet if I am going, but if yes I'll be driving and will have space in the car.

Suzanne, you're welcome to ride with me. I'm happy to accept cookies. :-)

Excellent! Thanks everyone. I guess it's time to buy plane tickets to Seattle then.

And the most important question for Eric is... Chocolate chip? Oatmeal? Sugar? Snickerdoodles?

Whatever is your specialty. Surprise me.

(Just remember to bring your passport, because surprises at the border are not what I had in mind. :-)

If I also got myself a flight into Seattle at about 12:30pm (or earlier) on the Friday and booked a departure from Seattle at about 10:30pm on the Sunday, would someone or ones (not necessarily riding with the same people each way, though that would be simpler) be able to drive me to, from and around the training camp? It's technically illegal even if very spottily enforced for me to rent a car in the US and drive it into Canada and the price/schedule for flying in and out of Vancouver would be problematic.

Why is it illegal? I have rented a car from Canada and dropped it off in the US. I assume you could do the reverse?
Jan 13, 2009 8:29 PM #
jtorranc:
Why? This is something of which I have yet to find an authoritative explanation, only speculation. As to your statement and second question, you are neither a Canadian citizen nor a Canadian permanent resident so the restriction doesn't apply to you. I could legally do the reverse but would rarely find it advantageous to do so since I can usually fly from DC directly to US destinations near the border cheaper than I can fly to nearby destinations in Canada. I was never actually turned back at the border in the past before I learned of this minimally publicised law but I don't care to risk disruptions to travel now that I know of it.

Odd.

djrawman and jtorranc, the people I have talked with from Seattle are planning to leave for Vancouver around 10-11 a.m. There may be some who plan to leave later, but I don't know who they are. I'll post a message on our local e-mail list, but your best chance at a carpool is probably to arrive a couple of hours earlier.

jtorranc:
Thanks, Eric. It may not be possible for me to arrive at SEA before about 11am that day but it looks as though I could arrive very late on Thursday evening. Or maybe Rex and I could split a rental car.

I've changed my itinerary,

my new Southwest flight on Friday is:

Fri Feb 13 788 Depart OAKLAND CA (OAK) at 8:30 AM
Arrive in SEATTLE TACOMA WA (SEA) at 10:35 AM

can I meet anybody somewhere somehow?? will share expenses of course.

jtorranc I could go in on a car, would prefer to hitch a ride if possible though.

Here's hoping we both can hitch. I've changed to a flight arriving at 12:03am on Friday the 13th so hopefully someone will have a couch or floor I can crash on as well as an otherwise empty car seat.

Please register with me, by sending me an e-mail. There are some people on this discussion who seem to be planning to come but have not told me (you know who you are ;)

Jon, you can sleep at my place, and I could pick you up from the airport. The problem is that I might not be able to get the Friday off, so I'll be driving up to Vancouver most probably Saturday early morning. Either we need to find someone else to ride with or ride with me Sat early morning.

djrawman and jtorranc, I can pick you up from the airport and drive you on Friday. jtorranc, you're welcome to sleep at Terry's and my place.

jtorranc:
Sounds as though Rex and I will be okay then. Convenience, if I'm to ride with him, would appear to argue for sleeping at Eric and Terry's place. Though unless he can convince me he'd be coming by the airport around midnight anyway, maybe I ought to take a taxi to get there. In any case, thanks for the offer which I gratefully accept. I'll put my mind now to deciding what manner of ridiculously high calorie cookie or other treat I should bring in hopes of saddling the US team with some excess body weight :)

Suzanne:
I ended up flying straight to Vancouver in the end:) Although I can still make cookies.

If it rains now, I'm blaming you! You had to go and jinx it! :-)
