Hi all. Just throwing this out there. I have notice a very minor discomfort just below my left knee at the top of the shin. It is hard to describe as it doesn't really cause me severe pain...it is almost like an itch if that makes sense. It really hasn't stopped me from running but I don't want to make it worse if I can help it. Any thoughts??????

How old are you? Osgood-Schlatter is common in teens. (I only know because my nephew has it.)

Well then it's probably not OS.

Could also be the start of shin splints. How new are your shoes? If the arch support is gone, you can develop shin splints pretty quickly. It often starts as a minor pain just below the knee, but it can become a lot more serious quite quickly.

Thanks for the help! It seems to be just slightly above the tibial tuberosity. It isnt extremely sore but I do notice it! Shoes are all still fairly new but I have ramped up the miles in the last 2 weeks. Again thanks for all your responses!!

Patellar tendonitis: mine went from just noticable to "I can't run" in the space of a couple of weeks.

Tight quads and hamstrings and muscle imbalances are two potential causes.

Ramping up miles in 2 weeks would be bad idea, especially if you're OLD.

Interesting. Over how long a span of time would you recommend one ramp up the miles. Does it matter how many miles one is ramping up?

I've always had trouble understanding how someone could get started running if you can only increase 10% a week:

Zero times 10% = Zero

How much can you run per week with zero base?

If you can't ramp it up in two weeks, I'm not sure how you can increase it at all, ever.

Overtraining?, Snow and uneven footing generally? Downhill intervals? Sounds like a sports physio needs to get involved, and maybe a coach.

It has never snowed in Perth, at least not in the last 10,000 years. The point is you run a lot, in pretty awful conditions - you're going to have to expect a bit of wear and tear. Early intervention by a professional could lessen the impact.
