For someone who hasn't been to Stromlo since there were trees on that bit, it's interesting to see the changes. Is the sealed road near the start what gets used for bike races?

as it looks so open could you see most of the runners a lot of the time during the race?

Yeah, feet, the sealed road is the criterium circuit and the open strip just to the east of it is the manicured grass xcountry track. The strange area of square knolls running from #5-10 on the women's final loop is the mtb 4 cross course.
