I guess I'm a bit behind, having recently discovered Malcolm Gladwell's 2005 book "Blink: The Power of Thinking Without Thinking"...
Towards the end he refocuses on situations that make one lose the ability to think - stress, danger, racing heart rate - and what can go wrong with our thinking process...
Which is of course one of the things that seems to drive orienteering - finding a balance between speed and thinking.
If you have not read the book, you may find it entertaining.
