I would like to see the maps and courses!
It is interesting to know if the terrain in Calgary is the same as Hungary?
thx for the results, waiting for long ones!
Congrats for top 5 guys, the rest ones could do better!
I saw them doing better!!!
the gap on times does not look good for Canada!
A few select photos from the event. The Canadian Rockies were spectacular this weekend!

1.7K for M-Eilte Middle? Is this correct? Must be very demanding terrain if that is the case.

Route Gadget for the Sprint is on the Canadian Route Gadget database:
http://rg.orienteering.ca
That makes sense....on the splits it showed 1.7. For those guys to run 20 mpk it would of had to of been through fight green, up the side of a mountain:)
Route Gadget for that Middle is now available

Go Patrick. A couple of years ago I learned of this fast Canadian who could rip through a Sprint. Apparently he can navigate all the way through a long too now. 1st & 2nd in the Men's Long are the same 2 at US and Canadian Trials, Oystein & Patrick neck & neck! Pretty big gaps in both races from them to the rest of the field.
indeed Patrick and Oystein had good runs and created a big gap to the rest of the field.. they did the same 3 weeks ago at US trials, again with Mike S nearby..probably they can comment (if any) regarding the gap between them and the rest of the field at both events
The big gap between PG and the other Canadians is called hours of training. That's the only way to do it. No shortcuts.
re: PG and big gap.
4.5 years ago at Ontario Champs PG was 20-25% behind in M21 at Ontario Champ.
3.5 years ago PG wasn't "fast enough" to make the "A" heats at the sprint series finals at Pawtuckaway.
last year PG makes WOC "A" final in sprint.
Congratulations to everyone. Looks like some good competition.
Congratulations Patrick !!!
You and Oystein ripped the field. Great....
Looks like the Canadians might get their own famous PG. Way to go!!!
I'll add my thanks to the organizers on the weekend of races; great terrain, maps, courses and someone nailed the weather as well. Really enjoyed the woods even if the Calgary club sent attack baby moose after an Edmonton runner....
Patrick was flying out there; don't forget Mike Smith's solid run in the Middle as well.
But, the giant elephant (or moose) in the room is the lack of ladies (see affect on Salal's Sunday race) as well as lack of athletes from certain regions in the country. The Aussies are having a good chat about their team, should Canada too?
Here is the Canadian National Team selected for the 2009 World
Orienteering Championships in Hungary. The team was selected by
Marie-Catherine Bruno, Ted de St. Croix and Magnus Johansson.

Middle: Nick Duca, Mike Smith, Wil Smith
Long: Nick Duca, Patrick Goeres, Jon Torrance

Women:
--------------

congratulations to everyone, especially my fellow club member Will, who has taken considerable steps to get back into orienteering this last year or so.
>lack of athletes from certain regions in the country.
Huh? But the final team has members from BC, AB, MB, ON, and NB.
Thats pretty good right? ... and pretty typical of late.
I'm not even sure any political parties have MP's from each of those provinces...
Is it possible for one competitor to compete in S,M,L and R events at WOC? Or is there a rule preventing this?
Would be a daunting task due to quali's and time but I was curious if any country/person does this?
Daunting for some yes but not for Simone and her 4 WOC golds in 2003 AND 2005.
There's nothing preventing someone from running all four events, and it certainly does happen... but it also makes for a busy and stressful week.
I think there are few people who are running all 4 races (3 qualifications and relay), and just watching finals :)
Congrats to all, who made the team!
Good luck to Patrick and Mike Smith!
Is Mike S. saving for relay??? (no long for him?)
Hanny Alston has been
selected to run everything this year, she also ran everything in Ukraine .
Ross Morrison (NZ) made each individual final at last year's worlds & ran in the relay. So it is possible to do, though I understand he was finding it tough by the end of the week. Doubt any man (& very few women other than SNL) could run in all events and seriously target wins though.
How did I forget Ross, I was the Coach, whoops!
Iliana Shandurkova (BUL) has run all the quals, finals and relay at the past 4 WOCs (Japan, Denmark, Ukraine, Czech Republic). I suspect she'll try again this year. Pretty amazing.
