Ontari'O' in 2006!

Ontario clubs will host the 2006 North American (Golden Horseshoe) and Canadian Championships (Guelph Gators). The NAOC will be held on new maps near Milton from October 06-09 (Canadian Thanksgiving long weekend). The COC's are slated for the summer - likely in the Collingwood area.

Both competitions will take place on or near the Niagara Escarpment (a UNESCO Biosphere Reserve). The NAOC's will offer participants some of Ontario's best limestone terrain. For more info on the NAOC's visit: www.dontgetlost.ca/glof

Since no one else seems to have any comment, I'll say how glad I am the COF finally sorted that out - it was quite irritating the NAOCs being on hold waiting for COCs to be sorted out. I'm looking forward to the mooted March training GHO training camp and another shot at that limestone terrain.

The Golden Horseshoe Orienteering Club c/o Ontario Orienteering Association has received $42,900 over 20 months from the Ontario Trillium Foundation to develop new adventure running maps for the community, school events, provincial races and the 2006 North American Orienteering Championships in Halton Region, Peel Region and Simcoe County. The Ontario Trillium Foundation, an agency of the Minstry of Culture, receives annually $100 million of government funding generated through Ontario's charity casino initiative.

Czech mappers (Ales Hejna and Vendula Svobodova) of Olles have just arrived in southern Ontario (after visits to Alberta and Yukon) and will be making maps in many parts of the Golden Horseshoe this autumn (Barrie, Bolton, Oakville, Milton). Some of the new maps will be used for a training camp in early January. They will also be making some of the maps for next year's North American Championships.

I was not thrilled with Olles mapping for WMOC 2005 in Edmonton, there were major errors on the maps they did. I hope they improved their work since then

Which WMOC maps do you mean? If you look at the WMOC program where it lists who mapped what, they did not actually do a lot of the competition maps. They worked on the 3 model maps, which I thought were fine, with the exception of #3 which had some small hills I would not have shown. They did some extremely small bits of Qual. #2 around the edges, and for the final in the program describes it as being mapped by Robert Micek with some revisions by Ales and Vendy (implying improvements, if anything, to me).

I would be interested in identifying errors on the WMOC maps (as an Alberta orienteering) so we can fix them for future events. Perhaps you could give some details?

Could someone in the know comment on how the 35% Orienteering Today Club discount combines with the Early Bird, Regular and Late entry fees for the GLOF 2006 events? Also, what maps are being sold as training maps and are any design details on the shirts available?

Nev-Monster:
J-Roc there's a t-shirt design on the website, I think under meet info.

So there is at http://www.dontgetlost.ca/glof/details.htm. Knowing which style of top that is might still be nice given that the Axis Gear sizing charts vary considerably depending on that. The other questions stand.

Hammer:
J-Roc, thanks for bringing these questions to our attention. We have added information to the web site to answer these questions.

1) OT-Club members running all of the GLOF races will get re-imbursed at registration (35% off entry fees only). After registering online email glof@dontgetlost.ca with your OT subscription number.

2) Training maps. We will have a sprint training map of part of the McMaster campus not be used in the race available for pre-race training, warm-up, etc. Also in the package will be a middle/long training map which will consist of a small portion of the Rocky Ridge map not being used in the races and a portion of the existing Hilton Falls map (for samples of that see web site).

3) The Axis Gear design will change slightly but it will be very similar to the one shown on the web site. The shirt is the 'single track' design and we have now placed a link to Axis Gear's sizing chart. It is a long sleeve Cool max equivalent performance shirt. Suitable for racing/training in or plain old hanging out at the trailer park drinking with your buddies.

Want an event this May 20-21 weekend and aren't heading to Saint Louis, then come to Ottawa for Eastern Canadian Champs. 3 races in two days. Nice woods, the tullips are our and I'm pretty sure Trooper is playing in town Saturday night.

TROOoooooo-PER!!!!!

I have friends that got drunk with trooper out east. Yep, I have famous friends.

And ask me about the time I waited at a crosswalk with Dan Akroyd.

Trooper?! Were they in town to sing the National anthem at the Sens game. Oh, yeah I forgot the Sens are playing golf! ;-)

>I have friends that got drunk with trooper out east.

Then there is Mark Innes that partied with Ivan from "Hommes sans Chapeaux".

Yep, I owe you some donuts Hammer. Unless, of course, you'd like to go double or nothing on who will represent east and west for the cup?

Have ye the stones?

YEs, Sage Stomp is also on this weekend, with a classic, a sprint and a chase-middle. Lots of fun for sure, and bonus, participation in the 40 pointer sprint of the prestigious PG Sprint Serie. Wahoo!

Nev-Monster:
Wes, I hate to burst your bubble, but I'm pretty sure most Canadians have friends that got drunk with Trooper out east. That's one of the job descriptions for being in the band. That and raising a little hell.

How can you not like the Sabres in the east? Their hometown (Buffalo) is only an hour away from some of the best orienteering terrain in North America (Hamilton).

Edmonton vs. Buffalo for the cup? At least then I might be able to get some tickets...

How 'bout them Sabres!?! I had to miss 2 home games against the Flyers because I was away at O-meets, but I'm really looking forward to Wednesday night (game 3 against Carolina). I'll be 9th row, right behind the net where the Sabres shoot in the first period.

Of course, being a long-time Bills/Sabres fan, I need to remain calm - I kind of know where this is headed... but hope springs eternal!
