Discussion: What Are the local club clusters?

I'm trying to divide clubs into logical local clusters and need help, especially from the east coast.

f.e BAOC + GCO is logical cluster of two clubs where people often visit each other events.

LAOC and SDO is another good example,

What would be corresponding satellite clubs for COC, QOC, DVOA?

How the area of middle america is divided?

Thanks for help

While I don't have any data on cross-club event attendance, this may be useful:;

For COC, it's SAMM (Sammamish).

In Oregon, you've got ORCA and CROC.

Anecdotally, I would say that DVOA attracts runners from HVO, SVO, and QOC. QOC is on the southern border of a cluster, so I don't think they have cross pollination in that direction. SVO is a smaller club, whose members can go to QOC and DVOA. HVO can go to DVOA and WCOC.

In the NE, the big cluster would seem to be NEOC, WCOC, CSU, and UNO.

And, of course, there are some other small clubs in the vicinity. Ian's link should identify those.

I know firsthand that there is a fair amount of visiting amongst CNYO, ROC and BFLO. I'm not sure that is a clean "cluster", though, since I would guess that CNYO travelers may head to EMPO land as well?

In the Tex-Ark-Ana region, you have NTOA, HOC, ALTOS and now AOC -- we attend each other's meets and are often members across clubs as well.

I would put WCOC in the same cluster as HVO, as most of its maps/events are closer to NYC than Boston.

CNYO is as far from EMPO as EMPO is from HVO. However, some EMPOers are frequent participants in northerly HVO events.

TSN and GPHXO are a cluster.

There's also often travel between (SDO, LAOC, sometimes BAOC) + TSN.

Do orienteers in the US not attend each others clubs events??!?!

Sure we do, it's just that a lot of clubs are really far apart. In Tucson we have one club, and the closest other club is centered 100 miles away, in Phoenix. They only hold a few meets a year, so then the next closest clubs are centered in LA, San Diego, and Albuquerque - sites that usually take at 5-7 hours to drive to. That's why some of us spend a good chunk of our disposable income on plane tickets...

OK and PTOC.

CNYOers almost never come to EMPO-land (it's been quite a few years) -- unless you count A-meets. There is one CNYO member who lives in the SE part of the club's coverage who occasionally comes, partly because she has family in our area.

Occasionally we'll have people attending from HVO or NEOC.

Some EMPOers go to WCOC and (northern) HVO meets (others besides us); sometimes we even go to NEOC and DVOA meets but usually when there's more than one event on a weekend. But we happen to live in the SE corner of EMPO-land, closer to NEOC and WCOC than other EMPO members.

Thank you all
I got the point and after taking the map in consideration it seems quite reasonable and predictable.
Now I would like to shift discussion to the underlying essence of the question:

I'm going to use clusters to create local ratings (FYI only, nonofficial) using publicly available data @ WinSplits

Cluster is a good "entity" as club is usually too small to have sensible rating in itself.

Currently I have for last 12 months ~ 10K records out of which
(by hosting club)
2.4K is BAOC,GCO
300 is LAOC,SDO
800 is NEOC, CSU, UNO
800 is USMAOC,EMPO,WCOC,HVO
1200 CNYO,ROC,BFLO
1600 DVOa, COC, SVO
900 COC,SAMM
300 OCIN,MVOC,COO
400 LROC,RMOC

Most of the numbers would be greater if WinSplits were used more often. Apparently BAOC is much better than anybody in WinSplitting :)

What form of the cluster would be most optimal for the local B,C, meet low key rating?

P.S.

It might make sense to consider this as a cluster:

COO, ICO, MVOC, OCIN, OLOU

It looks like use of SI e-punching is what most determines whether or not there is WinSplits data.

Echoing cedarcreek's comment, OCIN uses SI at most of their events, as well as their annual 3-4 event Flying Pig.

Unfortunately using SI punch is far from being enough to be on Win Splits

http://leshij.org/O-web/ocin_winsplits_races.jpg

is a list of ALL ever uploaded OCIN races @ Win Splits I was able to find.

Show me if and where I'm wrong, I will be glad to be mistaken...
Same story with many other prominent clubs...
