With WOC coming up soon, I wonder what the goals for the US Team are or should be.

Not to get lost in the woods maybe?

If that was the goal, I could have made the team.

Well, I don't necessarily know if this is the right forum for this, and I certainly cannot speak for the whole US team, but a question has been asked, and I might as well answer. (Especially since the US Team is supported by US orienteers and they have a right to know what we hope to achieve.) And yes, not getting lost in the woods is a goal, but perhaps only a marginal one. :)

I am racing the sprint and middle races at WOC, and hopefully also the relay. For both the sprint and the middle, my goal is to have races within 20% of the winners' times in my heats. That should give me a chance at qualifying for the finals, which is a "dream goal" - something that i hope to achieve, but won't feel like I failed if i don't do it this year. Another goal is (this is something i've been thinking about the whole season) to have less than 3 minutes of mistakes per 60 minutes of racing. In other words, no more than 45 seconds in a 15 minute sprint, and no more than 90 seconds for a 30 minutes middle distance.
As for the relay, the goal is to have solid run and, hopefully, beat Canada! :)
All of this is contingent on being healthy in time for WOC, which is looking a bit doubtful at the moment.
At any rate, dcady, I hope I answered your question to some degree and that you will follow the US Team's results during WOC. It's great to have US orienteers taking interest in the Team, and we really appreciate it. If you have any more questions i can be helpful with, please feel free to contact me.

Forget about beating Canada or you'll go home really disapointed ;-)
