I think this is the first time in the history of the sport of orienteering when the United States has a world champion - Sharon Crawford has just won the Ski-O WMOC. Congratulations! http://www.beat-meier.ch/www.skiolwm05.ch/results/...

Congratulations Sharon ! You're an innspiration to us all!

However, this is not the first US world champion. I think Sharon won her age group at the veteran's one year (in Spain??). She certainly has medaled several times, including a bronze at last year's veteran's. (Can someone help me remember the details here?)

And Peter Gagarin won his age group at the veteran's in Minnesota.

Sharon has a long and distinguished record, included several wins at the World Masters Champs in both foot and ski orienteering.

The other place where U.S. have world champions is in rogaining, with quite a few wins. Here it has been not just in the older classes (veterans and super-veterans!). In Arizona last May the Men's Open class was won by a pair of American adventure racers.
