Yesterday at the Gates of AMT Hell arena, in front of a sold out, standing room only stadium, the Junior Team represented by Anna Shafer-Skelton, Marty Hawkes-Teeter, Andy Strat, and young John Fredrickson, soundly defeated the generally more handsome and beautiful and intelligent Senior Team repesented by Samantha Saeger, Clem McGrath, Hillary Saeger, and Eric Bone, in the Junior-Senior Sprint Relay.

In trying to explain away their defeat, Senior Team Spokesman Boris Granovskiy blamed "packs of vicious, marauding attack badgers that were selectively going after the tastier Senior Team members", but that excuse didn't fly because the arena had been carefully swept free of attack badgers prior to the competition. Instead, it appeared the Junior victory was more likely due to superior teamwork and spirit and, perhaps, the slight handicap they were awards by Master of Cermonies and Impressario Mr. G.

Actually, I believe the Senior Team had a slight lead after part 1 of the Junior-Senior Challenge, the "thinking" part. The questions were:

For the Junior team:

1. To see if you were paying attention to something other than yourselves, while you were competing at the JWOC in Lithuania, which American was winning a gold mmedal at the World Masters Champs in Austria?

2. The US Champs are this weekend. Who is the defending F21 champion?

3. Who has the best US finish ever at JWOC (and when and where)?

And for the Senior Team:

1. To see if you were paying attention to something other than yourselves, at the Western States Champs this past weekend, who had the best time in M20?

2. Ditto, for F20?

3. Who was ranked first last year in F18, and also won F18 at the US Champs last year in Oregon?

And then there were 2 questions posed to both teams:

1. What was the best finish ever by a US team (men or women) at the WOC -- when, where, and who was on the team?

2. Now many US classic champs has Swampfox won?

There were a lot of wrong answers (especially by John F.), but also a few correct ones. By the end of the thinking part the Senior Team had a small lead, only to have it blown away by the speedy juniors in the running part.

Correct answers:

Marty Hawkes-Teeter

We felt bad that the Senior team embarrassed themselves so badly, and we really didn't mean to beat them by that much, but I guess we didn't even know the extent of our speed. It will be exciting over the next couple of years to see these Juniors charting new ground on the results boards of the big international races...
