Discussion: Elapsed time problem with SI

We had a weird problem today on a small meet with the SI. Our last control's clock was out by 15min or so. About 4 or 5 runners came in before we caught it. Anyway, we were able to "okay" their times in "Evaluate SI", but the it won't post an elapsed time for them. We have start and finish times (real time), but it won't calculate/show a run or elapsed time. Even if I go and edit the time on the last control such that it is in sequence, the software still won't show a time (box in lower left hand corner of Evaluate SI) nor will that person show up on the results (says they have no times). BUT we do have a start and finish time, which are correct, captured. Any ideas?

Forest, if you want to backup and send me the event files, I may/should be able to determine what the issue is.

This was an issue of the Zero Time being set for after the first start - ZT was 10:30:00, first start was <10:30:00, so the 6 people starting before 10:30:00 were affected. It is an easy fix to change the ZT to an earlier time since they were using a Start control, and ZT was not important when using a Start control.

Ahy, yes, that is it, I didn't think of that. Thanks so much!

Is there any problem SI guru Valerie cannot solve? You should have a contract with SI itself.

Happy to be able to help out.

Here's another question for the SI Guru...

what is the best way to handle people changing classes between events?

We used the MT2003 as we thought it would simplify registration for a multiday event (even though we are not doing a multi day time/ranking), as opposed to doing a series of individual days (OS200x). How is best to managme people running different classes on different days? Do we need to have them use different SI sticks on the different days? Thanks for the advice!

When are you moving to BC Valerie?

Ahh, the multi-day dilemma, especially when it wasn't a total time event. Choice is simplify with one database and only have to make corrections to name, club, etc. in one database. But then have to deal with people who are running in different classes...

I have found it easier to stick with OE200x for events which don't require total time and when the events are going to lead to many people asking for different classes - like when you are doing a short day and a long day.

I am also a huge proponent of allowing people to change courses after the first day. At one of my first A meets, I was in over my head on the Green course and asked to move down to Orange for the second day. Despite my tears, I was turned down. Ever since then, I have tried to accomodate course changes for the second day of the event. I don't mind the extra work, if the maps and start times are available...

If I am using MT200x, I create a second entry for the person and change the SI card for day 2 of the original entry to a bogus number (usually add a 9 to the front of the real SI card number). I also add a number to the front of the original Start Number - 1 to signify that this was the Day 1 record. See the example for the bottom two records for Wrenn Taylor.

I then go to Evaluate SI Cards and change the appropriate records to DNS.

You can issue a second SI card, but you still need to create a second record to get the class correct, so I think editing the original SI card is better.

Valerie:
My first A-meet ever was the US Champs here in St. Louis in 1991 or '92. I signed up for Orange Day 1 and Green Day 2 'for the practice' and because nobody mentioned that it was a 'total time' event. On Saturday, I asked to change to Orange Open for Sunday and likewise was refused.

Then I spent 3+ hours in my 4-wheel drive pick-up on dirt roads looking for a lost orienteer. (A strong young 5K runner with little O' experience ran off the map on 'his' way to #1; after 4-5 hours a stranger picked him up on a road and found us.) Having missed banquet supper, they relented and let me run Orange Sunday! So Valerie, you neither starved yourself nor did anything 'noble' that day - tough luck :)

So, Rick, does that mean you have the same tolerance for course changes, or that you require a certain amount of suffering before you'll consider it? Maybe I should mention that 2 of my 3 hours in the "woods" had me mired in black, dirty swamps up to my knees - and my shoulders when I had to keep fishing my shoes out... :)

We have a regular Brown runner who we are very happy to change to Yellow after Day 1 - we are the only ones who have suffered up to that point.

Are you one of those freaks that require new nail polish everyday and a foot massage? I wanna make sure I know what I'm getting myself into before I tell you to pack your bags!

vmeyer:
Nah, just new inserts every so often. I don't think I have ever painted my toenails, and don't be massaging my feet either. :)

How soon can you make it?

Only 17 more years until my retirement kicks in... Will have to continue to spread my guruness from afar until then. :)

I'd be ok with having my toe nails painted if I could get a free massage out of the deal. Heck, I'm already shaving my ankles for taping so why not make everything nice and pretty. Hmmm.... it appears I'm on a bit of a slippery slope. Forget I said anything.

Again!!! Ooops, sorry, didn't mean to send your over the SI edge! You are correct, I did "kind of" lie. :) But I do plan to visit someday.
