I'll give it a predicted lifespan of about 30 minutes in the bush.
so you can tap the display to either bring up the backlight or to designate a new lap while you’re working out

Oooooh, a new lap every time I run into a tree! Tres progress! :)

With a fancy touch screen, I suppose the Nike watch will not take to rough service while orienteering. I have heard the Garmin 405 controls criticized for similar reasons.

I occasionally have that problem with my Garmin 305. I have thought about fabricating some kind of cover for the buttons to prevent inadvertent lap switching, or even worse... accidental clock stoppage during the race.

fyi, you can lock/unlock the 405 touch-bezel by pressing both real buttons at the same time. this feature was not in the original firmware, it came in an update at some point. (edit: patrick is right, I was confusing that with a related bug fix)

Since the nike "tap screen" is accelerometer-based, you might be able to accidentally trigger a lap without even touching it, if you just hit your arm/hand/toe against something. but it also sounds like you can choose whether to enable that.

I thought this feature was in the original firmware. I've had a 405 basically since it launched, and this feature has always been there, because I've always used it.

I wear the 405 on my left wrist, so the two real buttons are facing outward, so I've had a few instances where I'll accidentally stop the watch because I'll run into something that hits a button. But that's less than 1% of the time, so it's not enough nuisance to move it to my right wrist.

I also use the 405 as my everyday watch, so I like the much smaller form factor over the 205/305/310.
