Discussion: Hagaby XML import

Does any event software handle the import of XML hagaby data from Condes?
The closest I can get is Geco, but at first look it appears to treat the first and second parts of the course as different courses. Maybe it deals with this in the allocation of courses. I haven't got there yet.
OE latest version doesn't seem to have made any advance in this area, but I would be very pleased to be put right on this.

There is a IOF XML standard for exchanging data between softwares. All modern orienteering sotfwares more or less handle this format at least for courses (as the developer of Geco, I have seen some problems related to regional settings).

Now I have never heard of Hagaby before. Is it a style of course setting? If you can send me a sample file and explain what is expected, I can see what I can do.

If you send me the import file, I can check for you whether latest OEvent can handle it: goran(dot)nagy(at)orienteeringonline(dot)net

If they are defined in Condes as course variations, Autodownload and Geco will load them OK, but treat them as separate courses. goran77 suggested in a previous post that OEvent will treat them as variations of a single course, but this might not necessarily be what you want to achieve if the overall result for each runner is an aggregation of the times for each variation - in this case, treating the race as a one person relay might be an option, with each variation as a leg of the relay (not sure about how you go about downloading after each leg though).

@simon- condes file is on its way. With a bit more explanation.
@goran77- Thnx. I have already tried OE2010. It seems to behave much the same way as OE2003. That is, it imports one hagaby course rather than the variants. Geco imports the variants using the same XML input. Which leads to Hawkeyes commet.
@Hawkeye- I have not tried Autodownload or OEvent, but was willing to if someone could tell me of a successful import for one-person hagaby event. At this stage it would seem logical they would behave the same as Geco... one person relay rather than one-person hagaby. My event is based on aggregate times, so I suppose I could run it as a one person relay and aggregate the times afterwards. But at this stage I have decided to just input the variants manually into condes. At least that is just extra time at the desk before the event rather than extra complication on the day of the event.

I think this is a form of event that has been overlooked by event management software in general. I am surprised as I would have though the one-person hagaby was a standard event format.

And by email cedar creek suggested using OS2003 amongst other things. IT would be an interesting solution, probably requiring a change of SI stick at the map change. I could put the replacement stick in the map bag for each competitor.
In suggesting Or, he also gave me the opportunity to use the word 'or' consecutively in a sentence.

I'm not at the computer with OS loaded on it right now, but I was thinking you might be able to set up a relay, but put everyone on the first leg on different variations. If there was an option to show a "results by leg" or something like that---something that would aggregate the variations into one results list by time..

The xml file did successfully import into OS showing Var(iations?) Parts, and Comb(inations?).

So the import problem with OE is part of the marketing strategy for the software. That is hard to determine from the help files, as OE has a 'One Man relay' option.
Rather than changing OE, perhaps a change to the XML export functionality of Condes would overcome this problem. Finn?

In 2008 we had some problems with trying to import courses for a Hagaby event from OCAD. Late last year, after pointing out the problem to OCAD, the latest fix for OCAD 10 CS (Jan 2011) has fixed the bug and you can load courses via the OCAD V8 text file export into OE2010. Correspondence with the builder of OE2003/OE2010 informed me that the only method of importing courses for a Hagaby (one-man-relay) is via the OCAD V8 text file import. The XML import of courses will not work in OS either, the V8 text file though works quite well, provided that your course legs all have the same number of parts.

From Finn Arildsen-

To address this scenario, Condes 9 will include a "loop" variant of the relay concept. The loop feature will support Hagaby relays, butterflies, and other variants of one-man relays. Each course variation (comprising all branches of all loops ) will be included in the XML export. My understanding is that OE will accept this concept as "one course" with multiple variations.

Simpler question - how do you get two "bind forks" associated with each other in CONDES. Must be in a menu somewhere, but I cant find it.
