Woohoo!!!
YO-COOOPY, YO-COOOPY...hey yo yo yo yo...
Apr 20, 2011 6:51 PM #
Hirppa:
Me and Jagge (mostly Jagge) try to get one favorite's tracking to show up. I forgot wrong tracking address to the phone I gave to him.
At the moment he can be seen here:
http://www.ls37.fi/gadget/cgi-bin/reitti.cgi?act=m...

Wonder who the vacant22 is..?
Apr 20, 2011 7:08 PM #
eddie:
15-16-17...how cruel! (and well timed apparently)
Apr 20, 2011 7:09 PM #
Jagge:
Trying to redirect data from the wrong server... and looks like it the server swap works now.
Apr 20, 2011 7:14 PM #
Jagge:
I think Topi (leader) skipped one control at the first butterfly. No, I was wrong, he did it just fine.
Apr 20, 2011 7:14 PM #
Hirppa:
After over 10 emails, Jarno (JKä) can be seen in tracking.

Just want to add, this yökuppi is one of the biggest in A-class (46 entries):
http://yokuppi.net/?page=kisa&kisa_id=194
Guess late winter and closing 10mila has something to do with it.
Apr 20, 2011 7:19 PM #
Hirppa:
You might be right Jagge. The GPS looks somewhat accurate so Topi may have skipped #2.
Apr 20, 2011 7:21 PM #
Hirppa:
But now he went for it...
Apr 20, 2011 7:27 PM #
Hirppa:
Are TAh and JKä really that much behind TPe? Man they suck.
Apr 20, 2011 7:30 PM #
eddie:
Big crowd. Would be cool to see more folks with antennae.
Apr 20, 2011 7:33 PM #
Jagge:
Man they suck.
take a look at your route 10 > 11 ;)

Hirppa:
All I've got to say is: it takes one to know one.
Apr 20, 2011 7:46 PM #
eddie:
Well, that was fun. Another Wednesday afternoon, down the drain :)
Apr 21, 2011 5:46 AM #
Jagge:
Vacan22 was AP's Terkelsen, of course. He disappeared because he dropped his gps. I think the device is still there http://www.attackpoint.org/sessiondata.jsp?session...
Apr 27, 2011 3:45 PM #
Hirppa:
Today again at ~22:00 (in 3h20min). There should be at least six in tracking. Including last time's winner (MHe).'

Thought I'd make a list of who is who in the tracking:

Tracking id - Name - AP-username - my arbitrary rating - class

KLe - Kristian Leppänen - Terkelsen - * - H35
JKä - Jarno Käyhkö - **½ - H21
JRy - Jarkko Ryyppö - Jagge - ** - H40
ALe - Antti Lepola - A.Le Coq - * - H45
MHe - Mikko Heinonen - *** - H21
TPe - Topi Penttinen - ** - H21
TTu - Tuukka Tuomala - * - H35
TAh - Timo Ahvenainen - ** - H21
KHi - Kimmo Hirvonen - Hirppa - * - H21
JHä - Jani Hämäläinen - Hämis - ** - H35
JBä - Johan Bäckman - *** - H21
AAn - Aleksi Anttolainen - aaanttol - ** - H18
TLe - Tomi Lehmusvuori - *½ - H35

Today:
KHi
KLe
MHe
TAh
TLe
and maybe AAn

eddie:
YO-Kuppi!!! Wish I had some popcorn.
Apr 27, 2011 6:53 PM #
eddie:
5 mins to start. Live tracking link - same as last week.
Apr 27, 2011 7:10 PM #
Jagge:
Looks like Jani's and Mikko's trackers are configured to send only one point per 20 seconds. Not exactly how I would like to see it done.
Apr 27, 2011 7:14 PM #
eddie:
Hey Jagge, would it be possible to add a runner's real name to the "roll over" dropdown on each icon, along with the pace, etc?
Apr 27, 2011 7:27 PM #
eddie:
#4 seems to be causing some trouble.
Apr 27, 2011 7:31 PM #
Jagge:
possible, yes, but there is so much there should or could be done, especially the static dot - label combo is pretty lame at the moment.
Apr 27, 2011 7:33 PM #
Jagge:
I wonder if #4 is missing or misplaced, everyone seem to stay there way too long.
Apr 27, 2011 7:36 PM #
eddie:
Yeah, looks like there was just a 3-man conference there.
Apr 27, 2011 7:52 PM #
Jagge:
Looks like course setter skipped #4. Mass start with a skip, makes this a typical goat race, no?
Apr 27, 2011 8:00 PM #
eddie:
With a twist!
Apr 27, 2011 8:05 PM #
Jagge:
Chase is on, but mistake is needed, the lead is so big.
Apr 27, 2011 8:08 PM #
eddie:
Interesting routes to 20. Not sure why those three opted to go so far right. I guess I would have tried the rides left of the line, but having tried to find rides in Finnish woods in the daytime I think they'd be nearly impossible to see at night. Tomi is headed for the yellow corner.
Apr 27, 2011 8:18 PM #
Jagge:
I think they tried to go straight and hit the slope and follow it to north, but maybe some unmapped tracks took them so far right (or they tried to stay right to hit the slope for sure, and just over did it).
Apr 27, 2011 9:51 PM #
Hirppa:
I can confirm that the #4 was in a wrong place. Some found it, I didn't.
Not sure who this KHi was since it's not me..? Someone has the same ID now... Fortunately there's the whole summer to solve it now.

Most likely the results will be made so that the whole east-loop will be deleted from the time.
Apr 28, 2011 7:36 AM #
Jagge:
Maybe it was Terkelsen again. I hope he did not drop his gps again. Buying a new gps for each yökuppi race would show commitment though.

Voiding events for misplaced controls seems to be fashionable around here. Last weekend's WRE race was voided for 18 meter misplaced control.
Apr 28, 2011 11:37 AM #
bubo:
Voiding events...seems to be fashionable...

...but not in Australia.
Aug 31, 2011 6:06 PM #
Jagge:
It's getting dark, starting soon again.Interval start, no idea who will show up with tracking. Tonight's map & course.
Aug 31, 2011 6:35 PM #
eddie:
eeeyyyyooooOOOOOOOO KUUUUUUPPPPPPPIIIIIIIIIII!!!!!!!

Aye Aye AYE AYE AYEEEEEEEEEEE!!!
Aug 31, 2011 6:52 PM #
eddie:
I'm liking Kimmo's routes. His execution is near perfect too. Will he catch Kristian?
Aug 31, 2011 7:00 PM #
Jagge:
will not happen. Kimmo (Hirppa) made mistake and Kristian (Terkelsen) has two controls left. There is pack of at (least) 3 runners now.
Aug 31, 2011 7:11 PM #
Jagge:
Courses were easier than I thought before I saw them. I guess course setter wanted to get home early :) I can imagine it would have taken time with tricky courses.
Aug 31, 2011 7:19 PM #
eddie:
Yep, just as I spoke :)

Hey, I want to talk to you about how this whole set-up works. I'd like to try it over here for the NA champs in 2012 - maybe just a few runners. Would want to test it at a few races between now and then, so need to make a start on it soon. Do you have anything written about the setup - hardware and software?
Aug 31, 2011 7:33 PM #
Jagge:
Well, nothing written. There is regular route gadget at server, runners has smart phones, powered by internal gps or BT gps. Usually they use Nokia s60 phones. But iphone/android devices can be used too, somehow - there is just no "app" for them like for s60, just browser web page using html5 geolocation api.
Aug 31, 2011 7:37 PM #
eddie:
Ok, thanks. That's a good start. Is the s60 app open source? I may have an app writer we can employ to translate to the other platforms. I think the iphones will be more ubiquitous here. I have none of the above myself. Just a rock with numbers scratched on it and a bit of paperclip for an antenna. It works if I talk REALLY loud.
Aug 31, 2011 8:02 PM #
Jagge:
Yep, it is not much of an app, just a a simple python script. Iphones hasn't been used much mostly because it isn't that good for this purpose.
Aug 31, 2011 8:06 PM #
eddie:
python is even better. Can you e-mail me the script?
Aug 31, 2011 8:10 PM #
Hirppa:
Thanks eddie. I suppose that was the first time anyone has said that from my orienteering :) Being in bad shape helps with the navigation.
Yeah, the flags/reflectors were pretty high up. #5, #6 and #7 were the ones where most of the mistakes were done.
And what comes to the whole set-up, only "difficult" thing is to get the app installed to the phone. At least from my and some other people's perspective. The computer setting up is somewhat easy.
Sep 14, 2011 3:38 PM #
Jagge:
Yökuppi continues tonight, two hours to go. Map will be this (but not this course):

Hirppa will not be there, he is somwhere in the US, lost in Harrriman I guess.
Sep 14, 2011 7:31 PM #
eddie:
Rats, I missed the race today. That's what I get for mowing the lawn. Thanks for the gear photo. Last week I worked on getting the apache server running on localhost on my laptop so I could install RG, but I still haven't finished with that. I did get it configured on port 3000 so that it would load HTML, but I still can't get simple cgi to run. As you can see, my learning curve starts at zero :)
Sep 14, 2011 8:06 PM #
Pink Socks:
Next time you mow the lawn, you should wear a GPS tracker so we can all watch you.
Sep 14, 2011 8:08 PM #
ndobbs:
Shouldn't he wait a day or two before getting lost in Harriman?
Sep 15, 2011 6:24 AM #
Cristina:
eddie, do you have a Mac? Try MAMP for a wicked easy Apache setup.
Sep 15, 2011 6:36 AM #
Jagge:
Instead of installing it on your laptop you should install it on web server. (or try using one already installed somewhere). Phone clients will send tracking data to it, most likely they can't access your laptop's apache as easily.
Sep 16, 2011 3:04 AM #
eddie:
Thanks Cristina, I'll try MAMP. I'd love to install directly on a server, but unfortunately I do not have access to one (that will run cgi) at the moment. So my solution was localhost just to get RG up and running. I also don't have root access on my mac, which just makes everything harder.

This is the extent of my current apache config - a single line call to httpd :)

httpd -f "BindAddress *" -C "listen 3000" -C "ErrorLog /Users/bergeron/desktop/log.txt" -C "PidFile /Users/bergeron/desktop/httpd.pid" -C "LockFile /Users/bergeron/desktop/accept.lock" -C "DocumentRoot /Users/bergeron/desktop" -C " bracket Directory /Users/bergeron/desktop bracket Options All bracket /Directory bracket"

Or with everything in my httpd.conf:

listen 3000
AccessFileName /Users/bergeron/desktop/.htaccess
ErrorLog /Users/bergeron/desktop/log.txt
PidFile /Users/bergeron/desktop/httpd.pid
LockFile /Users/bergeron/desktop/accept.lock
DocumentRoot /Users/bergeron/desktop
LoadModule mime_module /usr/libexec/apache2/mod_mime.so
# LoadModule alias_module /usr/libexec/apache2/mod_alias.so
AddType text/html html htm
AddType text/plain txt text conf def list log in
AddHandler cgi-script cgi pl
#ScriptAlias /cgi-bin/ /Users/bergeron/desktop/cgi-bin

bracket Directory "/Users/bergeron/desktop" bracket
Options +ExecCGI
## AllowOverride All
## SetHandler cgi-script
## .htaccess
bracket /Directory bracket

And it mostly works, only cgi won't run, despite the explicit +ExecCGI
Actually I think I needed the mime module load to make it work, so that one-line call is some old version. I gave up a week ago. WIll try MAMP
Sep 16, 2011 2:54 PM #
edwarddes:
Why don't you have root access? Is it a work computer with an OD/AD policy preventing it? Or have you just not enabled the root user? By default OS X ships with logins disabled on the root account, and you need to use the OD utility to enable it.
Sep 16, 2011 3:31 PM #
eddie:
Its a work computer :(

Its ok, I contacted some smart people in DVOA and made a hand-off. Hopefully RG will be up and running this weekend, and with ALOT of luck we might just track someone in the forest. Even found someone with a Nokia phone!
Sep 16, 2011 8:41 PM #
eddie:
If Hirppa is indeed in the eastern US, send him to the Delaware Water Gap event this Sunday with his gear. We could use his help.
Sep 19, 2011 2:10 PM #
Hirppa:
Unfortunately I read this a bit late. I am here (Long Island City at the moment) and I would've even had my tracking gear with me.
I was about to build up tracking for our Surebridge training but didn't find a prepaid sim-card that would work with my phone.
Sep 19, 2011 6:17 PM #
ndobbs:
Only 50 minutes on Surebridge? You must be really fast and smooth!
Sep 20, 2011 1:23 AM #
Hirppa:
Yeah, both. Or just lazy. No, we wandered for maybe almost double the time but 50min was pure running. More on my log when I get home (wed/thu). And yeah, thanks for the maps again.
Sep 21, 2011 4:11 PM #
Hirppa:
About half an hour to mass start. Weather is perfect for night-o: 11 centigrade and little drizzle. Not sure yet who will be in the tracking. I'm on the organiser side this time.
Sep 28, 2011 2:34 PM #
Jagge:
Tonight again. This time I'll be running too, and tracked and i'll shoot it with head cam. But no live video.
Sep 28, 2011 3:42 PM #
eddie:
Awesome. IR headcam? :)
Sep 28, 2011 4:46 PM #
Jagge:
regular. Map is up now.
Sep 30, 2011 7:06 AM #
Jagge:
And here is the head cam video:
http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=tgBhdGrigbo

Next week there will be mass start again. Here is video of the mass start start two weeks ago: http://yokuppi.kuvat.fi/kuvat/2011-09-21-Messila/l...

Blair Witch Project all over again...
Sep 30, 2011 10:24 AM #
A.Le Coq:
A lot of running until Jagge found a makkara.
Oct 5, 2011 2:36 PM #
Hirppa:
It's on again in about 1½h. It's clear sky at the moment so could be closer to 2h.
If Jagge gives MinnaR a tracking gear with, then there should be nice tracking in B-class too. MinnaR, Ruhis and a D17 Finnish long dist. champ Elisa that has made some "entertaining" mistakes lately (thus with tracking).

Tracking

Jagge:
Clear sky, lots of light. I guess start is delayed, they are still waiting for darkness.
Oct 5, 2011 4:55 PM #
eddie:
Awesome. Ok, Jagge also set things up to point the data to Hugh MacMullan's DVOA RG server in PA, so you can watch there too!

Hey, I've been on this map before! Or rather, I've driven across it on the E75. Apparently it wasn't mapped at that time.
Oct 12, 2011 4:36 PM #

Looks like Antti was headed to 5 rather than 2. I hate when I do that.
Oct 12, 2011 4:40 PM #

There is A and B, and both have two alternaives. Antti is doing just fine.
Oct 12, 2011 4:56 PM #

eddie:
So it WAS aliens! I knew it!
Oct 12, 2011 7:20 PM #
A.Le Coq:
Still alive.. Vanished but not completely. Managed to survive. Saw those aliens in the green. Look at those shocking headlights! 5000 lumens.
Oct 12, 2011 7:32 PM #
A.Le Coq:
Didn't do just fine. I had first the left butterfly. Then I was heading to right butterfly (#2 in map) and ran south instead of east.. The rest of the course (after I vanished in the green) went quite well, but it was just running.
Oct 19, 2011 2:37 PM #
Hirppa:
In an hour, we should be on our way to #1. But mass starts are always late.
Today there should be interesting tracking again.
In A-class:
Tuukka Tu (Mr Yökuppi) - Tuxi
Kimmo Hi - Hirppa
Aleksi An - All-in
Kristian Le - Terkelsen
And most likely some "urheilukoulu" guys.

B-class:
Minna Ry - MinnaR
Hanna Ru - Ruhis
Elisa Ma - D17 Finnish long dist. champ
Oct 19, 2011 3:49 PM #
eddie:
Today we also have the parallel server running in Pennsylvania:

Hanna and Antti together now on the way to 8. Drop him Hanna!! Last time the aliens got him in the green.
Oct 19, 2011 4:18 PM #

So only these 8 being tracked tonight - I gather there are many more out there who are not being tracked.
Oct 19, 2011 4:20 PM #
eddie:
Juha and Kristian appear to have the same forking and have been together the whole time, moving pretty fast.
Oct 19, 2011 4:21 PM #
Jagge:
About 80 runners tonight.
Oct 19, 2011 4:31 PM #
Jagge:
Valtteri (H16) seems to take the lead from Juha and Kristian.
Oct 19, 2011 4:32 PM #
Jagge:
No, he made mistake while I was writing here.

But Hirppa is making a long training tonight. Good for him :)
Oct 19, 2011 4:47 PM #
eddie:
Indeed. However I think I'd be making those same mistakes in broad daylight on this map.
Oct 19, 2011 5:03 PM #
Jagge:

That terrain is rough, but sure looks beautiful. Thanks for the link to the video Jagge.

He's back on track!
Oct 19, 2011 7:38 PM #
Hirppa:
Thanks for the "support" guys. For a second I actually thought I should get the phone from the back pocket and read from here where I should head. But my fingers were so cold that I couldn't even open the pocket's zipper to check out how long I had been in the woods. Well, at least I can put a 2h training to my log.
Oct 19, 2011 7:40 PM #
hughmac4:
Great job Hirppa! We were cheering for you!
Oct 26, 2011 3:12 PM #
Jagge:
Starting again. Some may recognize tonight's area, there has been some lesser competitions and matches before. But now Yökuppi!
http://www.yokuppi.net/tracker/cgi-bin/reitti.cgi?...
Oct 26, 2011 3:13 PM #
Hirppa:
In 20min it's on. Individual start and sort of a long sprint.
Oct 26, 2011 8:28 PM #
eddie:
Rats. Sorry I missed it (sometimes I do have to work in the middle of the day :). Doubly so since I've been in the woods on this map. Picked blueberries in the vicinity of #10 once.
Oct 27, 2011 5:32 AM #
Hirppa:
Well, next week then. Then it's "The Final". Distances are over four times longer than today (so you should be able to tune in at least for part of it), it's mass start and there should be all the tracking devices that we have.
Nov 1, 2011 7:11 AM #
A.Le Coq:
Tomorrow. Nearly 100 participants. Mass start. Forkings. Map changes.
Nov 1, 2011 7:03 PM #
eddie:
Fire and brimstone coming down from the skies. Rivers and seas boiling.
Forty minutes of darkness, earthquakes, volcanoes. The dead rising from the grave. Human sacrifice, dogs and cats living together...mass hysteria!
Yökuppi!!!!!!!!!
Nov 2, 2011 9:14 AM #
Hirppa:
I was about to come here to say something uplifting but I guess it would've been kinda futile after eddie's approach to the subject.
We changed back to the "Daylight Losing Time" last sunday so I guess the time difference is one hour less to the States at the moment (by the time this post was sent, it's about 6h 45min to the start).
There should be good amount of tracking devices tonight. At least it looked like it this morning in my livingroom. And now it seems there's over 100 runners in this year 2000 world cup terrain. 22 of them will try to beat the 81min barrier the course setter put for the 14.1 km A-course.
Nov 2, 2011 10:27 AM #
eddie:
What could be more uplifting than human sacrifi, er, I mean dogs and cats living together? Here's to robust cell connections!! Huzzah!!!
Nov 2, 2011 10:47 AM #
Jagge:
I by accident deleted the email message with those maps&courses. I haven't received maps again yet, so there may no proper tracking tonight.

Edit - according to my mailbox there may be after all.
Nov 2, 2011 2:29 PM #
Hirppa:
I feel like I'm in the wrong class... I try to give tracking gear at least to Antti Vainio, Sami Hämäläinen and Mikko Heinonen. They are all around 50 in Finnish ranking (when Yökuppi leader/winner is 138). Also Topi Penttinen (63) might have his own gear.
Nov 2, 2011 3:12 PM #
eddie:
What's the word on live tracking today? Any chance?
Nov 2, 2011 3:57 PM #
Jagge:
Up and running, eddie.
Nov 2, 2011 3:58 PM #

Unfortunately it's not raining or showing and that undergrowth isn't all that challenging either in reality.

Come on Hirppa. Speed up.

Look at this split on #6 between Mikko and Aleksi...
Wow, that was awesome. Mikko was running alot faster on the track, but Aleksi made it all up at the end when Mikko had to cross the undergrowth.

Yökurko is back! And hirppa checked map's edge :)

Yes, Scotty just beamed him back down to the surface.

I thought hirppa was going to get them with the straight shot on that leg, but that's sometimes the price of a more difficult attack. Good thing that thick black line was there for him to relocate on.

"Kirk to Yökurko, get back to the ship immediately!"

"Belay that - stay down there and for Pete's sake, keep running!!"

Looked like Aleksi momentarily was heading to 20 instead of 14. Mikko will open up a lead now.

Terkelsen, easy for you to yell from way there. I'm pretty sure we would've finished quite close to each other.
Yeah, I made an embarrassing mistake to #6 (14/18). I have lived 20 years few hundred meters off the map and still I could make such a loop. In fact I was going only with memory in that place so it kinda turned into me.

If I were ever in need of a color commentator for real-time results blogging, I think eddie would be my first choice!

Hirppa, I was just having my thumbs up for you and hoping you'll beat all the elves, gremlins and eskimos out there.

Me, commentator? No no no. Balter's yer man. I'll be happy if we can feed him live tracking info like this, although feeding Balter is always risky.

I was thinking of real-time blog commentary, or live-chat, or whatever (not the audio version). You bring in a mix of play-by-play, cheering, and Star Trek and Simpsons references...

I´m only missing the Peanuts references...

Yökurko is known for being almost invincible in all sports and games, including night O. He is known to run with extended, very very long base plate compasses in both hands. In mass start night races like last night there is always many runners following him. He says he runs such races without battery pack, with solar cell back pack. He says he saves the earth while doing night O. Last night he did not win because he ran with stones only map to get at least some challenge. Or at least that's what he always tells us. I honestly believe him, why wouldn't I, he is Yökurko after all.
