Can I ask all the Attackpoint members who will be attending the Batona 500 event, to please add it to their schedule of upcoming events? I need an accurate headcount.
Just go to the "racing" tab, click on the Batona link, and scroll to the bottom.
Thanks.
We have over 300 runners registered for the A-meet with 100 of them signed up for the sprint(s).
Why do you need an accurate headcount? Hmmm?!?
You'll have to wait and see why I need this information. Let's just say an unusual idea evolved during the North Americans, due to conversations I had with Barb, JJ and Mike.
See me this weekend if you're nterested in participating in the AP fund-raising event (Note that this event is in no way sanctioned or organized by AP; AP did not approve this message:)
What is the AP fundraising event?
and does it involve partial nudity?
Do you mean we collect money to buy Kenny a cool Christmas present?
Thanks for organizing the fun AP fundraiser, maprunner. It was tasty, too. :-)
Yes, I was totally surprised by what the activity was... and it was quite fun, despite the fully clothed status of the participants.
And what, perchance, would this mystery activity be? I'm curious, "despite the fully clothed status of the participants."
It was a bingo game (nothing to do with control placement)
Yeah it was a lot of fun!!! I got to meet some new people to which was nice so i now know who some more APers are.
Eric -- it was a bingo game in which each block (25 total) were filled randomly with user names of APers who said on the AP event list they were going to attend; each card was different. You had to find the AP person (good way to test your knowledge of user names!) & get them to sign their block. When you got five in a row in any direction, you got a small edible prize from maprunner. Appropriately, "Ken" was at the center of all the cards.
Sounds great - I wish I could have been there...
thanks to all who participated!
It was genius. We have to do more things like this at future meets.
While we are talking about AP users, it seems that eddie made an appearance at batona 500. Did anyone find out why he disappeared from AP?
great job Mary!!! This was great fun, and I see no reason why the same activity couldn't be done again at the next A-meet, and the next. Plenty of AP'ers out there to get to know!
eddie claimed his work productivity was negatively affected by Attackpoint. I find this distinctly believable.
Eddie: Taking a break from AP or something...
AP bingo: Good idea - a fun way to meet fellow APers.
Oliver Johnson: Ran 4-something/km for 7.5km's of blueberry. Nice. I wonder if we can get him to post his splits here so we can get see what a 'real' elite orienteer looks like on the Rankings list... :) (Anyone know him?)
The splits are up already automagically - go look (eg on Winsplits).
His splits are really impressive with steady speed along whole distance. Very well done.
Now if he'll just claim his splits the rankings will take a whole new form. Would definitely be interesting to see.
Thank you, Mary. The bingo was a great idea and I had a lot of fun with it. I thought I'd finish it yesterday, but everyone was gone when I got back from control pickup! :-) I wonder what the "edible prize" was?
Thanks, Mary! I never was able to complete an actual row, but it was a lot of fun. And the fact that there were so many APrs with cool nicknames inspired me to change mine. It fits me all too well.
Thanks to everyone who participated. It was a lot of fun watching everyone running around collecting signatures. And we raised $60 for Attackpoint.
Kudos to Cristina for being the first to get "Bingo" and to JJ who found all 24 people on his card (the 25th person decided not to attend at the last minute).
I would have posted sooner, but we just got home. We left the meet site at 2 pm Sunday, spent an unexpected night in Philly due to two (!) cancelled flights, but finally made it to KC at 5 pm on Monday. Now we're just waiting for our luggage :(
Thanks for setting this up! We should do it again. (I need another shot--I was very lax in filling in my card.)
No, lax is taking a card, carrying it around all weekend folded up in my pocket, and not getting even one initial. I even cheated, when I selected it, and got one with Sandy and me on it to get a headstart. And to top that, I didn't even pay for it! :) Oh, well, maybe next time.
Well I had the easiest row in the world and still didn't manage to complete it... but it was such a fun idea!
I didn't actually get initials for the 24th person on my card (
sit2much), but I was delighted to meet him at the start on Sunday -- we both had the same start time, and when I heard his name I loudly said, "Wow, you're sit2much!". He didn't know about the bingo game, and had no idea why I was excited to meet him (ubtil I explained it), but I think a lot of other people in the vicinity knew what was going on.
FWIW - Oliver Johnson does have an AP account: OJ with a few mentions in the archives over the years.
Mary - fun bingo.
I will definatelly play AP Bingo next time around. At least I will have an excuse to go around and ask "Are you 'such and such' on AP?". Not the best pick-up line but... who knows...
Well, if there's another AP Bingo, I might just have to change my name to something a bit more cryptic. It'd be more fun to have people go through two layers of questioning rather than just one.
sorry i missed it -- when/where was it?
It was ongoing throughout the weekend. Mary was walking around with the bingo cards and you could buy them at registration. I managed to hear about it early and executed the perfect strategy of "run early, hang around finish" to collect my signatures.
I have now 'claimed' my splits - this really is a very clever website!
Just wanted to say thanks to everyone who came and talked to me at the weekend for making me feel very welcome at my first Meet. I came away with a very positive impression of US orienteering!
I hope I will be able to make it to some more races sometime in the future. if any of you are ever in the UK be sure to get in touch.
And
yes, indeed, do we have a ways to go... Thanks for claiming the splits!
Oli,
You'll have to start logging and letting us all know how you are doing over there.
Apparently two more fast Brit's have now posted splits... at this point, a 100-point Attackpointer could be expected to have a good shot at qualifying at WOC I think... Next task - get some American's up toward the 'new' 100.... ;)
To be there one has to train a lot!
