There may be some merits to the objective system - counting only ranking scores from Team Trials, but there´s still some subjectivity involved (petitions).
In this case the subjective system misfired - another time the objective system doesn´t get everything ´right´.

In the Swedish trials a totally objective system would actually have meant that Albin wouldn´t have made the team. Tough luck being injured for the trials, but that´s what happened to our (Stora Tuna´s) best junior - Anton Sjökvist, who´s usually considered to be better than Joakim Svensk - and has had JWOC as his main goal this season.

I may have forgotten a few, but here in the US we have had grievances filed over team selection (different teams) on at least 4 occasions in the last several (10+, I guess) years. One of the recurring themes is that selection rules are set, then performances don't meet the expectations of the organizers, so the rules get modified to select the "right" team, and there is dismay all around.

I think that the US selection process has been, on balance, really good over the past 10 years. The rules are specified in advance, haven't really changed much, and are mostly objective. I don't recall rules being changed during or after the results of the competition.

I do recall the process feeling much more subjective in the 90s, however.

I'm not confining this just to the senior foot orienteering team and there is some overlap with a certain recent -bashing thread.

Did people seriously quit the Trail-O team over that thread?
