Discussion: Will the Canadian marathon record fall this weekend?

Perhaps this is a little OT for orienteering but I'll post it anyway.

The Canadian men's marathon record is now 36 years set by Jerome Drayton in 1975 in a time of 2:10:09

Canada now has some faster marathoners with Hamilton's Reid Coolsaet leading the way. Last year Reid ran the fastest marathon time by a Canadian on Canadian soil in 2:11:23. This year he wants the record.

GHO member, Paul Trebilcock (AP name = turbo), has been filming Reid's progress and will be at the Toronto marathon this Sunday to capture more video as Reid prepares for London. Thanks to Paul, Reid gave a very inspirational talk to our Adventure Running Kids program last autumn so there are many people that hope he will break this record.

Check out Paul's videos of Reid at VO2 max youtube link.

If he's a little behind schedule, he could always take the bus.

Reider makes me very proud to be a redhead runner from Hamilton.

He's got one of the more interesting athlete's blogs out there, especially if you like music. http://reidcoolsaet.com/

Here's a great interview by with Reid by my university roommate in Toronto Toro Magazine . Lots of stuff about his skateboarding background (he's broken 4 mins on a non-long board).

I am an outsider to that world. Can someone please translate that for me?

My guess is the 4-Minute Mile...

He absolutely killed the half in Montreal this spring in really tough windy conditions

fun article in the Globe about the Coolsaet, Watson, Gillis training group. Just shows how important having strong people to train with and race against is.

Weather is looking poor for Sunday. Showers and 40km/hour winds.

Interesting that Kip Kangogo of University of Lethbridge fame is going to be Canadian soon. He can certainly hang with the Reid, Watson, Eric Gillis (who has an awesome beard going on), Bairui and Dylan Wykes

Real tragedy that Danny Kassap isn't amongst this group.

windy again today but Reid opened up the first 10km into the wind in 30:16. Now they get a tail wind for 20km or so. Despite the wind on pace for new Cdn record (and the extra $36K in prize money).

Yeah Nev real tragedy for Kassap.

1:03:58 for half way for Reid. A minute ahead of Canadian record pace.

Still on pace for it at 30K, but now it gets tougher...

Yup but Reid just moved into the lead! 35K with a 45 second buffer on Cdn record but he could win the race too.

Have the link to Reid's ARK visit?

Just saw Turbo on TV!

Reid slowed down after the collision with the kenyan and missed the record by about 40s but Gillis also made Olympic std. by 1 second.

Yeah I saw Turbo too.

Here is the article on Reid's visit to Adventure Running Kids

some formatting issues with that ARK article. Don't have to fix it now.

Just saw Turbo ...apparently Reid also stopped for a sh$t. No sure what kinda time that cost him.

Still most impressive mid race pitstop in books goes to MrPither ...GRR2006; Griz, Pither and I were being chased down by The Duke et al. and Pither proclaims his immediate and non negotiable need. Despite being the slow anchor that day I was a bit ticked ...but Pither managed to disappear into the bush and reappear in sub 9sec!!! Didn't want to know if he managed to use some leaves.

Bender:
Oh yeah then Pither proceeded to tow BOTH Griz and I simultaneously using a Y-bungee ...a beast!

Don't forget that Øyvin Thon many years ago managed to make a stop and still win the WOC individual race.

Reid was interviewed this morning on Metro Morning and said he only lost 15 sec or so.

I was not surprised when Matt Galloway asked him about the hearing the crowd and he complained about the skinny grass runner that was tormenting him from a bicycle for the entire 42.2k.

Checking the splits, It looks like Øyvin lost ~45 seconds on control #9. (1979 Finland)

There are splits from WOC 1979?! Where can they be found?

I hear that skinny grass runner on the bike didn't even have a media pass either. Dunno how he made his way onto the course.
