The terrain looks fast but challenging due to phenomenal variety of rock features - great photos!
In terms of training or map study, what North American areas are most like these? Colorado?
Colorado and Wyoming are probably closest in the US. If you live on the east coast I'd be training at Harriman, which seems to require some of the same techniques (most importantly, ignoring excess rock and reading the contours above all else). The further northeast you go and the more glaciated the terrain gets, the less relevant it is (the contours in Australia don't tend to have the random jumble of knolls and marshes that you see at Pawtuckaway, for example).
I remember more rocks than that!
I think Buena Vista, CO looks good. Tentatively planning a camp there last week in June.
Looking at maps and pictures - that would be extremely fast terrain!
Ya I am planning on doing a bit of training in hariman before heading to aussie land
The area looks cool, not as much contour details as europe but minamizing climb will be important.
Looks like it will be cool, ppl going enjoy
In Canada - probably the Kamloops/Savona area maps are most similar.
For those crux legs traversing relatively featureless hillsides, DVOA's French Creek can provide some relevant training. The '85 WOC in Aussie granite had sections that called on "French Creek" skills. A little notice might get you some flags in the forest, and the scoop on the easiest running sections.
