Anybody have experience with Osteochondral Autograft Transplantation? This is surgery in which cartilage is taken from a non weight bearing part of the knee and then is grafted onto an area in the knee where the cartilage has failed. I'd be especially interested in recovery experiences and whether you think the knee got back to 100% or something less. My son (26 years old) is facing this.

I was being considered for allograft but the 4 months on nn weight bearing and only 80% success rate for 5-8 years seemed like a large price to pay timewise.

As someone who is currently experiencing knee pain (the rather general 'patellar femoral pain syndrome')... I wonder how one ends up at the juncture of needing these sorts of surgeries (as I do not want to head there)?

doesn't do their core training, doesn't rest when in pain, has bad luck with trauma.

Also transitioning into minimalist shoe might help in long run. Minimalist running forces you to develop running technique that protects your joints because it hurts to land on heels hard.

Or it might destroy you even quicker than the way that you were running before...
