A message from the Edmonton Orienteering club, here in Alberta. The Alberta economy is booming to say the least and there's probably other work available in town to combine with this, if time permits.

Orienteering Employment Opportunity

Edmonton Overlanders Orienteering Club is looking for a keen and suitably qualified orienteer to deliver a school orienteering program and to develop and deliver a club junior program. The work will include some school yard map making and some updating of existing city park maps. It will also include organizing some inter-school events and may include helping to organize some other club orienteering competitions or training.

A description of the Schools Program and the nature of the Club, together with more details on the scope of the proposed job, are provided at

http://www.orienteer.ab.ca/Schools/employmentoppor...

We have approximately $3000 per month available for the next two years. We estimate that delivering the schools program, which is currently on-going, will take about 40% of the time, the club junior program will take about 20% of the time, the mapping including school yard mapping will account for 25% of the time and other activities will provide the remaining 15% of the job.

The successful applicant should have post secondary education, at least a three years orienteering experience, good interpersonal skills and good computer skills. Coaching qualifications, officials training and mapping experience would be an asset, but if necessary we can provide the training needed in these areas. The rate of pay will be negotiated based upon qualifications and experience.

The work is located in and around Edmonton and is available immediately.

If you are interested in the job or would like more information please contact Geraint Edmunds at orienteeringinschools@shaw.ca

For anyone considering this, I'll note that this could be a very rewarding experience. The juniors in Calgary's program each year are enthusiastic, and learning fast.

Despite the Calgary junior program, some of us in Edmonton are still interested in beating Calgary soundly in a relay, but it looks like the powers that be in the province aren't interested in such an epic battle taking place.
Also, one of those Calgary juniors Dougal Owen has had an excellent nordic ski season so far.

we should definitely have an epic North vs. South relay battle at some point, I would be down with that. I helped out part time with the schools program part time last spring and it was a rewarding experience and I am considering helping somewhat again

Is this a junior or open challenge? I'm sure that the 'powers that be' will be happy to arrange something.

Oh for sure an open challenge, unless Edmonton's one junior wants to take on the Foothills alone. I was emailing Bill Jarvis and Jim Baker about it, but never heard anything after the AGM. I could only guess that it was scuttled by Calgary folks out of raw fear. EOOC would only scuttle it for other reasons.

The FWOC AGM is this Wednesday. I think a relay sounds perfect, so I'll make sure the case gets argued. We could make it a selection race for an Alberta Jukola team?

Jim Baker left the country not long after the AGM. I'll run for Southdowns if I'm in town. I'm sure Bill's just working out strategy.
