We passed them coming down off Bartle Frere shorly before sunrise. They were struggling and we felt bad for them. I was at the end of my rope trying to keep two of our teammates (not urthbouy) from bickering when we came upon Eastwind.... that put my race problems back into perspective!

After coming down off that 'mountain' we had a death march to the coast before an ocean paddle to the finish. I can't imagine how their feet would have felt on that nasty hot march carrying a teammate. They unfortunately had to be rescued on the paddle due to high swells and they DNF'd.... If I ever cried for another teams DNF I think that was it.

Fumihiro Kurata , the captain of that team, was also in Taz in Nov 2012 and stayed in our hotel. I spoke to him briefly about that trek (through his female teammate - his english is a s good as my Japaneese).

If I remember correctly one of his teammates from Eco-Aus perished while training (paddling) in Japan a number of years ago :-(

There is a hilarious (IMHO) story about Eastwind at the paddle skills testing for that E-C Aus race... can only be told in person :-)
