Can anyone advise on how to get coverage of NAOC 2012 results in larger press outlets? The local press in the Poconos has been very cooperative, but press releases outside the area seem to go into the void. I searched earlier postings on "Press", including working with Glen, use guidelines for an effective media release, etc. I've tried direct contacts to Inquirer reporters, but just got passed along. Any ideas?

Figure out who in the club in each area is the press contact (for those clubs that have someone) and go through them. They will have already built a relationship with the local media and will be able to get through to the media much more easily.

Kathy, in 2004 we had Don Sapatkin, a reporter for the Inquirer, come up to Hickory Run and write a story. He's covering health and science now, rather than "outdoors" topics, but maybe he would be helpful. Here's the link to the article:

Call up sports reporters directly and tell them about the event. Be ready with a short explanation of: 1. what orienteering is (using buzz words that will catch their attention - exciting, adventure, etc), and 2. a compelling reason WHY they should run with the story. This is most important - journalists get hundreds of press releases and story requests per day. WHY is your story remarkable and worth taking the time to write?

Then email a properly formatted press release if they ask for one, or even better is just an email with the event details. Be sure to include a good, short blurb on what orienteering is, some good quotes, etc. Some reporters may just copy/paste, or change only a few words from what you wrote in your email, so that way you control the message. Include a couple of good photos in the email - don't send them to an external source for those (most won't bother clicking on links).
