Discussion: NEOC A non-meet at Mt Tom?

It appears from Randy's calendar that the NEOC A-meet previously pencilled in for 9/29-30 has been canceled and the UNO meet previously scheduled for 10/13-14 has moved to 9/29-30. I'm curious as to the story - does anyone know what happened? Presumably UNO are taking the now-free 9/29-30 weekend to avoid conflict with BAOC's 10/13-14 meet, but why is the NEOC meet gone?

One issue was with NEOC's tax status. We were audited, and need to change our status to 501 3(c) from something else. The something else required that most of our income derive from NEOC members. It does seem that one ought to be able to work around that somehow, but I think people were playing it safe after being audited and all. Tax status is being worked on, but not in time for A meet this year.

I should add that I'm not entirely sure this was the issue.

I think NEOC is a 501-c-7, a social club, which is supposed to get some substantial percentage of its gross income from its members. An A meet would bring in a lot of money for non-members.

Of course they could show a little imagination and set up a special membership class, a "weekend member," with the membership fee included in the entry fee, and presto, all income is from members.

But that would be too easy....

Peter, when I grow up, I want to be just like you.

The BAOC event this year promises some very special terrain, unlike anything else in BAOC- or Tahoe-land. It is Championship-class terrain that is in some aspects similar to Mt. Bachelor, but a somewhat small area.

The weekend member idea was considered, although I believe rejected because the club does not want to seem as if they are trying to get around the audit and 501c7 rules (and doing this would be trying to get around the rules, I think). I don't really understand most of it, I was a history major, not law :) The club is in the process of changing to a 501 c3 so this doesn't happen in the future.

So Boris, you are hoping to become short, old, semi-blind, forgetful, and relatively non-hairy?

I think Boris relates rather to your mental sharpness. Age comes with many attributes, wisdom is one them, correct?

Well, at the very least, relatively non-hairy is something for me to aspire to...

I would think that becoming relatively non-hairy would probably be the most unlikely outcome of the passing of time. The rest are fairly inevitable.

The current plan is for NEOC to do an A-meet at Mt. Tom in fall, 2008.

If age comes with wisdom, I may stay young forever!!!!!

even if I am "relatively non-hairy".

The hair doesn't diminish, it just moves around.

yeah, but in Boris's case, if some hair moves, more hair will fill the gap. It's like digging a hole in the ocean.

If I aspire to be Boris when I grow up ( which is, I'll add, true) does that mean I need to aspire to be Peter when I grow up? must be some paradox police to settle this one.

You don't need to aspire to be Peter. You just have to aspire to be a Peter wannabee.
