Congrats to Anna and Elina Breton. After winning the NY section 1 cross country finals, they and the 5 other girls from the Suffern High School Girls Varsity Cross Country team will be heading to Buffalo NY for the state finals on Saturday. They will be competing against top team from NY's 11 sections. Anna is recovering from a foot injury but her times are still competitive. Good luck to the team!

In Washington State, one of our strongest varsity orienteers (dgrove on AP) just finished 6th at state (2A) last weekend, with the 18th fastest time across all classes, running a 15:40 5K.

Now that's got me wondering what the fastest 5K time is in the history of our local orienteering league...

15:40?! How many other US orienteers, past or present, could run that sort of 5K cross country time? The list can't be a very long one....

Go girls! Have a good run Saturday!

Mitch Bentley ran 29:47 for 10 km, which would imply a pretty fast 5 km somewhere in there...

Good luck to Anna and Elina. I'll look for them - one of my runners is in the same race (Val on AP).

The race is exactly five miles from the house where I grew up, and I ran the course there twice at our Sectional meets a few years ago, so I'm very excited to return as a coach.

In the early 1980's a kid named John Halvorsen was a top competitor for the Sir Robert Borden High School orienteering team and the Ottawa OC junior team.
His track PBs are 5k 13:20:44, 10k 27:43 and he ran a 1:03:15 half marathon.
Oh yes, competing for Norway, he also finished sixth in the 10,000 metres at the 1988 Olympics.

Good luck to the girls at the state champs (and to my nephew Iain Fyfe, running for the University of Regina in the Canadian University XC championships also this weekend. Iain and his parents live in a house built on the terrain for the 1971 COC but do you think I can get them to come orienteering? No.)

Oooooo! Where was the 1971 COC held?
