At the Venice race last year the organisers had your "live"/current placing print on your splits print as you downloaded. I have looked at the layout options in OE2010 but cannot figure out how they did this. Does anyone know, as I want to do it for the Australian Easter events?

Under Read Chips - Settings - select the Extended Format box.
Then you will have some additional Label options in the drop down box. I think you are referring to the option of "Split times/places vert."
or this is another option with "Split time sheet extended"

Thanks Valerie, I think the Extended Format box is the key to my solution as it brings up options I couldn't otherwise find.

I should like to get start times one hour before everyone else so that I can be in the lead for a short time.

Will that be enough? :p

I have now configured the splits prints successfully but my wife doesn't like it. She says it takes away those few seconds of hope as she walks over to the results board praying all the other competitors in her class were hit by falling meteorites or similar.

Yes Juffy, in the prologue.

Excellent sledge Juffy. Are you in the running for the Ashes series? It seems sledging is all our cricket team is good for at the moment.

You cannot sledge me unless you are going to be there to see the impending doom unfold.

@ prez_ret - you could have found the answer closer to home - they showed placings on the splits prints at the nationals in Tas last year, and the Oceania Champs in NZ in January.

Can't speak for Tas natl's, but there were no placings on the individual splits print outs for Oceania in NZ in January. I just looked at mine to be sure. :)
