Discussion: AP feature - filtering events

Wondering if this is a feature I have not discovered, or if this goes into the "suggested enhancements" category...

With the 2007 season on us, I'd like to view the events by:

Those that are close to me.
A meets
Popular events

(or a combination thereof;-)

The data is there, and the visuals are good, but for the sake of noise, I'd like to filter out things that I'm just not interested in going to (this summer;-) - I'd hate to miss something that I might otherwise like because I didn't pick it out from the "world" of events.

[Obligatory endorsement - attackpoint is the best thing for me - training log, community, planning, coach - and now I'm looking to help make sure I get to all the events possible]

As far as I know events are not custom sortable, but you can always suggest it here. And you can always nag Kenny here.

If you're in the US, bookmark the USOF calendar and/or Randy H's "unofficial calendar" page (both linked from the USOF website, Events page), for A-meets and bigger events. That will help filter out some of the marathons and local races that are currently on AP's race calendar... As for events close to you, bookmark your local club's (or clubs') website(s).

If Kenny can add your sorting suggestions to AP, though, great!

John is right, there's no way to do this at the moment. Good timing though...believe it or not, I've been thinking about event list filtering for the last week or so (I think john might have asked for this a while ago too), and I'm planning an overhaul for that section. so anyway, you may have this pretty soon.

As an aside...Someone in Britain wrote a filter like this for the BOF fixture list, with a Google mash-up. It's great to have.

How difficult would it be to add "sort by distance" and "sort by popularity" in addition to the current "sort by date"? Not as elegant as a complex algorithm, but very useful.

(didn't see a way to start the thread on the suggestions page)

Waving the wand that says "AP is even more of a worldwide success with 10,000 active users", I am thinking...

It is entirely reasonable for _every_ local club to make sure that every event is in the calender. (with a proper A/B/C/O rating) Given that number of events, it almost demands a filter.

But if the filter were something like:

Show events that are:
A level: AAA m/km distant
B level: BBB m/km distant
C level: CCC m/km distant
O level: DDD m/km distant
Popular: EE members attending

Then I could set a threshold of 200 miles for local meets, 400 for regional and other, and 2000 for A meets, and always view meets that have 50 or more interested people. (and retain the option to "view all events")

Lots of options here - and yes, good thoughts travel...-)

(aside - I'm confident AP will continue to grow - I wrote about it for the ROC membership in a newsletter last year (page 6): http://roc.us.orienteering.org/newsletter/wild0611... )

Aside to ccsteve: Thanks for putting your typing where your mouth is and uploading the ROC schedule. There's one typo: maybe you can correct the ROC event at Dryer Rd from 8/29 to 9/29.
